Excerpt from Analytical and Classed Catalogue of the Brooklyn Library: Authors, Titles, Subjects, and Classes The original plan of this Catalogue, as outlined in the Seventeenth Annual Report of this Library for 1875, and in the Special Report on public libraries of the United States, published by the U. S. Commissioner of Education in 1876, aims to afford read ers a more or less systematic arrangement of authors, titles, subjects, and classes, in one general alphabet; or, to use another's words, to marry the classed and dictionary systems, so long kept asunder. It is designed to carry its own index, and to be its own interpreter. The names of given authors or topics should be looked for precisely as words are sought out in a dictionary. If the desired information is not found under the word looked for, the inquirer will be referred to another heading, either synonymous or more comprehensive, under which he may find what he seeks. As a working catalogue for all classes of readers and students, it is not too much to say that it has already received the warmest expressions of approval from the large constituency who habitually use this Library, from many librarians and scholarly per sons, from the press, and from leading booksellers. I. The author-entry presents the works of an author arranged in alphabetical order, witha list of the contents of such of his books as contain several works, or distinct essays. The individuality of the title has been scrupulously respected, but an client has been made to drop all superfluous words. Additions to the title have been indicated by brackets The place of publication, the date, and the size or form are always given in connection with the author-entry.
