Her fame was thoroughly assured, and in 1865 The Journal published the decree of the empress, naming her Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. She was, however, refused admittance to the Insti tute, but, as if in protest, was elected member of the Institute of Ant werp. She lived in her chateau By, in the village of Moret, sur rounded by her animals and beloved by all the people round her, working indefatigably up to the age of seventy-two.
