Excerpt from Catalogue of the Public Lending Library The Public Lending Library now contains over volumes, and these have been catalogued briefly upon what is known as the Dictionary plan, that is to say, the authors, titles, and subjects are arranged in one alphabet, like the words in a dictionary. This catalogue does not lay any claim to bibliographical completeness. The entries have, however, been made sufficiently full to identify the books, and to give a tolerably clear idea of their purpose and scope. The date and place of publication, the size of volumes, and the editions (except in a few cases) have been omitted, in view of the necessity for economy. Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Books Contained in the Lending Library HE arrangement of this work is such as will enable the reader to find the author, the title, and the subject of any given work in precisely the same manner as one might find a particular word in a dictionary. It has, however, been long felt by persons using Public Libraries - especially by those engaged in study - that something more is required than a mere list of titles; something that will illustrate the character of the books available, and enable the student and reader to judge of their peculiarities and of their desirableness, as well as of their general merits. Excerpt from City and Country of Bristol Corporation Public Libraries: Catalogue of the Central Lending Library Attention is drawn also to a large collection of articles, reviews, etc., which have been brought together under special subjects and bound in volumes. The contents of these volumes have not been set out in this catalogue, but a fully type-written index may be consulted in the Library. It should not be omitted to mention that this very useful and valuable method of bringing such printed matter together originated with the late Ci-ty Librarian (mr. John Taylor), a work which his successor has been glad to continue, so far as his time permitted, at all the City Libraries. As books become worn out in service they will be replaced as far as possible by fresh copies. When such works are out of print or undesirable they will be withdrawn from circulation, andthe old number in catalogue and indicator will be used again for new books. Additions of new books will be made to the Library from time to time, as far as the limited fund at the disposal of the Libraries Committee will permit. Some of the books catalogued have been duplicated for reading or reference in the Reading Room, but any book other than Fiction or juvenile works will be issued to a student or reader desiring the same, providing it is not in circulation. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Central Lending Library, Hamilton Street, Including Some of the More Important Works Contained in the Reference Library This catalogue contains the titles of nearly volumes representing the stock of the Central Lending Library. The arrangement of the catalogue has been one of necessity rather than of choice, for whilst the Committee at first deemed the alphabetical or dictionary system the most suitable for such a popular library, it was found, upon calculation, that the production would be a volume of unwieldly proportions, and entail a considerable expenditure in the printing alone. A return to the classified catalogue was, therefore, adjudged inevitable, and whilst compressing the work to the limits of such a style of catalogue, to still give most of the advantages that the alphabetical catalogue possesses, with the only dis advantage of increased additional references to be made (in some cases) on the part of those consulting the catalogue. The main object has been to make the work as near as possible a perfect guide to the contents of the Library, not losing sight of the necessity of making such a guide at the same time simple and easily understood by the public. The classification, though not ideal nor yet even a scientific one, is the scheme originally adopted in the Library, and the complicated undertaking of te-arranging the entire library to adopt one of the more modern systems of classification was for the present believed to be inexpedient. By the addition of the extensive index of authors, and the preliminary index of subjects, simplicity of consultation it is thought has been secured.
