Issues around national identities have been central in Hispanism in recent years. However, scholarship remains pending on women's contributions to Spanish national agendas. This book addresses the visions of history, culture, and national identity articulated by Rosario de Acuna (1851-1923), angela Figuera (1902-1984), and Rosa Chacel (1898-1994). Their works elucidate the contested formation of Spanish democracy and the gendered politics of culture. Types of liberalism in late nineteenth-century Spain are debated in Acuna's theater and essays in part 1. Figuera's poetry, the focus of part 2, highlights the notion of history as trauma resulting from the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship, to privilege the recovery of historical memory. Part 3 explores Chacel's re-invention, in Barrio de Maravillas and Acropolis, of the liberal cultures of early twentieth-century Spain, from within a post-Franco era eager to reclaim those histories. The conclusion addresses the relevance of the writers' projects for present-day Spain. Christine Arkinstall is Associate Professor in Spanish at The University of Auckland.

«Modern Minstrelsy» «Miguel Hernández and Jacques Brel» is an analogy study of two contemporary writers, the Spanish poet Miguel Hernández and the Belgian «chansonnier» Jacques Brel. Through the tracing of universal thematic parallels in their work, «Modern Minstrelsy» discusses the poetry of Hernández and Brel as affined examples of both a socially oriented contemporary humanism and of a modernized medieval minstrel tradition. Modern and medieval, personal and didactic, violent and tender, the poetry of Hernández and of Brel proclaims the poet's serious societal responsibilities, as spokesman for and about our communal nature.

Generations of Basques in New York have vibrantly exercised their culture, language, values, and traditions, transmitting to their children a robust sense of ethnic identity. In today's world of globalization it is often assumed that particular communities are disappearing as a consequence of the factors of homogenization. However, the Basques have proved this false. Depicting Basque mutual aid societies, language courses, musical and dance troupes, cuisine classes, community activities, sport, political involvement, and ties to homeland institutions are just a few of the ingredients which mix to compose the chapters of this work. Readers will learn about the history and reasons why Basques left the Pyrenees of northern Spain and southern France from the personal experiences of political and economic exiles' oral histories. Original archival research allows us to discover the features of the early 1900s Centro Vasco-Americano, the Basque Government-in-exile Delegation in New York, and the development of Basque organizations. "Basqueness" is being redefined in this transnational cosmopolitan community, and with the pioneer spirit of their ancestors, latter generation Basques are nurturing and promoting Basque culture and identity to the world.
