Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989, the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation. As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction, cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex reconstructions. A final section presents potential future directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced understanding of the biological and material properties of allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in the successful management of challenging cardiac reconstructions.>

A major need of all cardiologists and surgeons involved with the application of allograft tissue to cardiac surgical reconstructions is met by this unique atlas. Step by step, it carefully describes the procedures involved in acquiring, sterilizing, and cryo-preserving allograft valves as well as the surgical technique used in left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions. All of the information needed to perform the reconstructions is given, including relevant references and applicable variations in method. Excellent illustrations accompany the description of surgical technique. All of the techniques are based on classic approaches, but assimilate the authors' modifications arrived at through vast experience. The wealth of references, illustrations and expertise in this volume make it a valuable asset for all cardiac surgeons.

This new book explores clinical information in the tissue transplantation field and acts as a comprehensive learning tool to comply with regulatory requirements. Broad in scope, coverage includes all the traditionally transplanted tissues and moves into more complex areas of tissue grafting and the assisted reproduction fields. This useful text focuses on the potential for disease transmission, ways to improve safety, and the role of the clinician in these safety aspects. The book starts off by describing non-surgical risks of using allografts and moves onto chapters devoted completely to tissue- or cell-specific issues relating to transplantation of the individual types of tissues or cells. Tissue and Cell Clinical Use: An Essential Guide is the final book in a series which covers all aspects of tissue banking, donation, processing, and transplantation. Each book in the series includes lists of learning points and case studies which consist of sample processing protocols, descriptions of where processing went wrong, sample risk assessments, or validation studies. This three book series covers all you need to know about tissue banking.

A certain standardization has now been introduced into the operative techniques of vascular surgery after the stormy developments of the last few decades. It is to make the knowledge gained in those years more widely available that this operative manual Vascular Surgery has been compiled. It contains contributions from numerous authors at European centers of vascular surgery. Both the young surgeon in training and the more experienced surgeon continuing training will find in this book all the necessary instructions for the diagnosis, preoperative preparation, and reconstructive surgery of the arteries, veins, and lymph vessels (the coronary vessels are excluded from this book, as they are covered separately). The chapters are structured according to a uniform scheme, with sections on special anatomy, indications, surgical tactics, and operative technique. The dynamics of individual operations are illustrated, step by step, in sequences of clear, multicolored figures. Aftercare and alternative angiologic therapies are covered. The vascular surgeon will find here new variants on the usual operative techniques and much stimulating discussion of complications and their prevention and treatment.

CARDIAC VALVE ALLOGRAFTS (HOMOGRAFTS) highlights the current controversy about freehand subcoronary aortic valve and root replacement with regard to postoperative morbidity and long term durability. It discusses particular implantation techniques of preference in young patients and in different root pathology. Other chapters address intermediate- and long-term results on cardiac valve and vascular homografts for treating complicating cardiac valve and aortic infections. The chapter on basic science additionally makes this book a highly authoritative reference source for cardiac surgeons, physicians and scientists. This work provides a current survey of the state-of-the-art.

Increasingly, pathologists are being confronted with the effects of a number of complex devices on the body. Cardiac pace-makers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, ventricular support systems for the heart are well established, and vascular and other protheses are being used in increasing numbers. New joint systems, contraceptive devices used as drug delivery systems, and the use of new cement materials all provide challenges in terms of their pathology. The articles in this text collectively form a body of information on these devices not available elsewhere and with an up-to-date bibliography.
