The philosopher Christopher Small suggests that musical meanings are concerned with relationships, both with other human beings and with the world, and that music functions as a means of exploration, affirmation, and celebration of those relationships. If members of different social groups have different values, or different concepts of ideal relationships, then the kinds of performances that enact those relationships will differ from one another. Using music to express benevolent intentions is not, in general, one of its most obvious functions. In fact, military music has been used throughout history to destroy cross-cultural communion. Music is also a powerful and ubiquitous tool in propaganda, and in facilitating various political projects in all kinds of inventive ways that have nothing much to do with the pursuit of peaceful and cooperative intercultural understanding, or with helping people address issues of injustice. This text moves far beyond the knowledge of music's power upon humans, however this may be conceived and explained. It addresses a field of inquiry that is still a tiny endeavor, at least in comparison with all other academic efforts in the world. The sparseness of serious theoretical engagement with the topic of music's potential role in the area of peace and policy is echoed by how little music is directly used in the "real world" for building a more humane consciousness. Finding ways to that goal is the purpose of this work.

"The voice is the most important instrument in Mexican Ranchera (Mariachi) music because the bulk of its repertoire is sung. However, no book on vocal care and production, voice history, diction, technique, graded song lists, and warm-ups for Mariachi singers has been available until now. Dr. Juanita Ulloa has designed The Mariachi Voice to create a bridge between the voice and Mariachi fields, and to extend the reach of training and advocacy for Mariachi vocal training to academic programs, voice studios, and individual singers. Her Operachi style evolved out of her own training, touring, recording, and training of others as a specialist in Mexican and Latin American song. In The Mariachi Voice, Dr. Ulloa shares vocal technique and pedagogy, introducing the female Mariachi fach. She highlights important differences in training the female voice for healthy Ranchera singing while still honoring the style and introduces Mexican Spanish Lyric Diction with International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Professor John Nix of University of Texas, San Antonio contributes an article on vocal production and care. Readers will develop cultural sensitivity towards this almost 200-year-old tradition. The Ranchera vocal history chapter explores the crossover classical vocal training of ranchera singer-actors in charro movie musicals, many tracing back to legendary Mexico City based voice teacher José Pierson. It is a wake-up call to raising the standards and accessibility of vocal training. The Mariachi Voice is sure to enrich those who take pride in sharing these songs and their singers as important symbols of Mexico's identity worldwide"--

When a Mariachi star transfers schools, he expects to be handed his new group's lead vocalist spot—what he gets instead is a tenacious current lead with a very familiar, very kissable face. In a twenty-four-hour span, Rafael Alvarez led North Amistad High School’s Mariachi Alma de la Frontera to their eleventh consecutive first-place win in the Mariachi Extravaganza de Nacional; and met, made out with, and almost hooked up with one of the cutest guys he’s ever met. Now eight months later, Rafie’s ready for one final win. What he didn’t plan for is his family moving to San Antonio before his senior year, forcing him to leave behind his group while dealing with the loss of the most important person in his life—his beloved abuelo. Another hitch in his plan: The Selena Quintanilla-Perez Academy’s Mariachi Todos Colores already has a lead vocalist, Rey Chavez—the boy Rafie made out with—who now stands between him winning and being the great Mariachi Rafie's abuelo always believed him to be. Despite their newfound rivalry for center stage, Rafie can’t squash his feelings for Rey. Now he must decide between the people he’s known his entire life or the one just starting to get to know the real him. Canto Contigo is a love letter to Mexican culture, family and legacy, the people who shape us, and allowing ourselves to forge our own path. At its heart, this is one of the most glorious rivals-to-lovers romance about finding the one who challenges you in the most extraordinary ways.

The focus of Learning with Childrens Melodies/Aprende con Melodas Infantiles is to recognize the need to transition children of Hispanic heritage into an English-speaking school system by building a classroom culture that not only recognizes the bilingual reality of its students but uses the language difference of the students as a vehicle to create linguistic empowerment. Each of the lessons is based on childrens songs from various ethnic cultures that make up the United States of America, including Latin American traditional songs. Literacy is accomplished more rapidly if reading materials have cultural relevance. If the protagonists of a story are Hispanic, the Hispanic students will be more attentive to the lesson. In the first lesson song, Los Pollitos (the little chicks), there are personifications of children with attributes of all children. The embodiment of childlike personality traits into the little chicks catches the interest of students that are English-speaking and Spanish-speaking. Repetition of vocabulary learned in the morning circle and in the other learning centers throughout the day will increase retention. Happy learning to you and your class!
