Built on the site of a Seneca Iroquois village, Canandaigua was an important railroad junction and home port for several steamboats by the mid-19th century. After the Civil War, local industries included two brick works, the Lisk Manufacturing Company, several mills, and the regionally prominent McKechnie Brewery. The shire town of the original county of western New York, Canandaigua was the site of the Susan B. Anthony trial in 1873. Today, the town is a center for business, government, health care, and education. Canandaigua is the home of Constellation Brands, founded as Canandaigua Wine Company; Finger Lakes Community College; Thompson Health System; the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center; and Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park. It is also home to one of the largest Wegman's food markets and the New York Wine and Culinary Center.

During his first few weeks as a Navy SEAL, Steve Giblin found a simple, typewritten document left behind in an old desk drawer by the Team commanding officer, entitled “THE TEN ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF AN UNDERWATER DEMOLITION MAN.” That single page, and the maxims it contained, followed Steve wherever he was based during his twenty-six-year career with the SEALs—fourteen of those as part of the legendary strike force that took down Osama bin Laden. Steve still lives by those tenets today, coming to realize how it laid out a regimen not just for elite warriors, but also for the rest of us in our day-to-day lives. Now Steve has applied them to this post-COVID-19 world we find ourselves living in, a new normal that will test both our resolve and our psyches as we’re challenged as we’ve never been before. Applying his own experiences as a Navy SEAL to these everyday rigors, Steve provides a prescription for both healing and thriving, a guide map to get to the other side better and stronger than we were at the beginning of a journey none of us signed up for. We’re all walking in mud; thankfully, this book offers the best and surest strategy to lift ourselves from it.

For more than 150 years, Finger Lakes Wine Country has played a major role in American wine history. At its heart are the four deepest Finger Lakes, part of a group of 11 long, narrow lakes in central New York. There, nestled among Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga Lakes, farmers began planting vineyards in the 1830s. In 1860, the Pleasant Valley Wine Company became America's first bonded winery, turning Keuka Lake into a busy shipping hub for fresh grapes and award-winning champagnes. Other wineries soon followed, as did railroads and basket factories. Early 20th century business was good until Prohibition forced wineries to reinvent themselves. In the 1950s and 1960s, innovators like Charles Fournier, Dr. Konstantin Frank, and Walter S. Taylor experimented with hybrid and European vinifera grape varieties. But by the 1970s, local grape growers faced extinction; it would take a grassroots movement and landmark legislation in 1976 to bring about a Finger Lakes wine renaissance.

See how Conensus Lake has grown to become a Finger Lakes tourist hotspot. Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the 11 Finger Lakes. Often referred to as one of the "Little Fingers," it is located about 25 miles south of Rochester, New York. In 1924, the City of Rochester announced plans to use Conesus Lake to supplement the water supply for its residents. A year later, cottagers around the lake successfully banded together to protect Conesus's sparkling waters and preserve the area as a summer resort. Over time, the lake area has grown, and restaurants, taverns, campgrounds, and amusement parks have sprung up from the demand of the lake's many visitors. Today, four towns--Geneseo, Groveland, Conesus, and Livonia--border the approximate 18 miles of shoreline.
