This document provides a foundation on which a knowledge infrastructure can be built for the Canadian Forest Service and an initiative put forward. The first part describes the technological, social, forestry, and organizational context that surrounds knowledge management at the Service. The concepts of the information society and knowledge economy are interpreted according to how they influence knowledge management at the institutional level.
