While this proceedings volume deals primarily with the conventional areas of metal, ceramic, and polymer composites for civil construction, several of the papers report on new developments in the emerging fields of wood and nanocomposites. The 63 papers from the September 2002 workshop includes the further integration of the fabrication and function processes, aspects of the scale of components which improve the competitive position of composites relative to conventional materials and the exploitation of new types of composite such as nanocomposites which exploit a variety of new length scales to achieve their functionality. This also gives rise to multifunctional composites which have attributes other than structural properties. In this talk these aspects of the future of composites will be explored and illustrated.

Important reference book on composites materials manufacturing technologies from Vietnamese, as well Japanese and Canadian researchers Edited by three internationally regarded materials science professors, this book is an important expansion of a series presenting composites research from Canada and Japan. For the first time it adds dozens of original papers from Vietnamese materials scientists to reports from Japanese and Canadian researchers. The book covers new materials, such as energy-producing composites, and offers information on advanced manufacturing technologies for fiber-reinforced materials, as well as metal hybrids, active, self-healing and biocomposites. Applications include biomedical implants, piping, automobile parts, fiber-optic sensors, and more.

While this proceedings volume deals primarily with the conventional areas of metal, ceramic, and polymer composites for civil construction, several of the papers report on new developments in the emerging fields of wood and nanocomposites. The 63 papers from the September 2002 workshop discuss manufacturing methods, materials characterization, simulation and modeling, and failure analysis. Topics include electron-beam curing of an epoxy resin, the mechanical properties of silk fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites, finite element modeling of a triaxal composite membrane sector, and interfacial fracturing and debonding failure modes in FRP-strengthened concrete structures.
