Mark Tewksbury is best known as a gold-medal-winning Olympic swimmer. His remarkable sixteen-year athletic career included three Olympic medals, numerous world records, and inductions into three major halls of fame: the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, and the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Although retired as an athlete, Tewksbury remains a highly respected public figure. He delivered prized swimming analysis for the CBC from the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, hosts the Discovery Channel's popular How It's Made show, and is Co-President of the first World Outgames, Montreal 2006.Tewksbury has spoken to millions as part of his eighteen-year speaking career and remains much in demand as an inspirational speaker to companies and organizations around the world. For years, the prospect of parliamentary reform has been a hot-button issue in Canada. More and more Canadians find themselves frustrated with how Parliament works (or doesn't) and end up increasingly checked out from politics as a whole, feeling like their voices don't matter to those in power. When he introduced the "Reform Act" bill in 2013, Conservative MP Michael Chong brought the issue of parliamentary reform to the forefront, proposing changes that would empower MPs and hold party leadership accountable to their caucus--and therefore, to all Canadians. Historian Royden Loewen has brought together selections from diaries kept by 21 Mennonites in Canada between 1863 and 1929, some translated from German for the first time. By skillfully comparing and contrasting a wide cross-section of lives, Loewen shows how these diaries often turn the hidden contours of household and community "inside out." The writers featured were ordinary rural people: young women and grandmothers, rural preachers and landless householders. They include a teenaged boy who immigrated from Russia to Manitoba in 1875 as well as a successful merchant, a traveling evangelist, and a devout, conservative church elder. An elderly grandfather recounted the daily circuit of his children's homes, while 19-year-old Marie Schoeder wrote of her literary aspirations, her "secret hope" that some day she would "write things that have a real worth, things that are worth printing, and things that other folks would love to read and pay for." From the Inside Out also contrasts diaries from two distinct Mennonite communities in Canada. The Swiss-American Mennonites in Waterloo County, Ontario, faced rapid urbanization, while the Dutch-Russian Mennonites in southern Manitoba maintained their more rural environment. The diaries mirror their writers' preoccupations with work and weather, but they also reveal a communityís social structure and round of activities such as weddings, funerals, and worship services. In the process of diary-keeping, the writers sought to make sense of a dynamic and often unpredictable world. Reading what they chose to record is to learn much about their culture. Their writings provide glimpses of their lives, their collective mindset, and their history as a people.
Inside Out- Final Conflict is the third book in a trilogy that focuses on holding governments accountable. Domestic and foreign governments absorb countries to become super powers that wield nuclear weapons as tools for imperialistic motives. Jeff and Ann develop what the Department of Homeland Security describes as a super weapon of mass destruction and removes all stops to acquire Seeker for Homeland Security's' use as an offensive weapon. Ann, with her daughters, Annie and Hope, redefine Seeker and the system becomes Destiny, the 'new sheriff in town'. Destiny is selectively used to stop world aggression resulting in Homeland Security relentlessly pursuing Ann and Jeff once again to steal the Seeker weapon. Homeland Security agents drive through the Academy fences crushing Jeff and Ann under the weight of the fence and vehicle while a second vehicle drives through another fence section and kills three Academy children and two parents. The Homeland Security agents make no apologies and hold themselves to be above the law when they act in the name of national security. Jeff and Ann survive and bring an end to world aggression and imperialism by all of the superpowers. Destiny temporarily shuts down the Internet and email capabilities while she uploads herself into the Internet and every computer that accesses the Internet. The seed for further action is planted with the hope that all countries will begin to respect the rights and liberties of other countries. If not, then Destiny will be back.
