‘We did not know; nobody has ever told us that!’ These were the words, spoken in tears, of Pope Pius XII on first reading passages from A Doctor at Calvary, Dr. Pierre Barbet’s scientific and reverent study of the Crucifixion of Christ. From an examination of the Holy Shroud of Turin—the authenticity of which Dr. Barbet accepts from medical evidence—a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s terrible agony is presented in language that cannot fail to move the heart. What kind and what degree of physical torture did Our Lord suffer on Calvary? What was the medical cause of His death? These are among the questions answered in A Doctor at Calvary, one of the most significant contributions to Christological science in modern times. Christ’s preliminary sufferings—the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scourging, the carrying of the cross—the wounds of the hands, in the feet, in the heart, the causes of the rapid death, and the entombment are recounted with the devotion and compassion of an ardent Christian and with a brilliant doctor’s accuracy of anatomical detail. ‘Without doubt this is one of the most gripping and moving books to have been published in many a year.’—Harold C. Gardiner, S. J. ‘As an aid to vivid viewing of the Passion, this book is peerless.’—Rev. John S. Kennedy, Balancing the Books ‘...a profoundly moving study of the Passion.’—Commonwealth ‘...a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s agony and death.’—Jubilee ‘This volume is an outstanding example of how science can contribute not only to theology, but to solid Christian piety, and thus be an aid to love of Christ.’—The Voice ‘This is a gripping and powerful book of the highest stature.’—Voice of St. Jude ‘Sincere study of this book will enable us for the first time to understand what is behind the words: ‘Jesus suffered and died for us.”—America

At sixteen, Julia Percy is told she’s destined to save the world from some obscure yet impending calamity. Julia thinks this prophecy is a huge cosmic blunder but submits to ten years of intensive preparation on a paradisiacal planet named Illyria. Now returned to Earth, she faces her first challenge as leader of a group of talented young people who call themselves Calvary. A wraithlike assassin called Banshee has targeted three agents of the Global Peace Federation. These GPF officers have obtained information which, if decoded, could lead to the Banshee’s apprehension. But when the first agent of this trio is murdered by the assassin, Calvary’s help is enlisted to safeguard the remaining duo. While protecting the officers, Julia quickly learns that Banshee is a deadlier threat than she’d presumed. Calvary becomes embroiled within a figurative crucible, enduring a literal trial by fire. To salvage Calvary and ransom the lives of her dearest friends, Julia must make an impossible choice: forever surrender her freedom or sacrifice her very life.

When I finished writing my fist book, which was my autobiography, With God As My Partner, and had submitted it to the publishers for printing, I thought I was done for a while. About two months after that, I was almost asleep one night when the thought came to me: Don't Stay at Calvary. I was instantly awake and lay there for about a half hour trying to figure out what it meant. Getting nowhere, I committed it to the Lord and went to sleep. A couple days later, as I was praying, the verse in Matthew 16:24 came to mind where Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." It connected with the thought I had about Don't Stay at Calvary. This book is the result of those thoughts and the meditation that I spent on them. I had no thought of writing another book so soon, but I felt impressed to try to address the question I had been asked so often. "Why is the church of today so different from the church of the first century?" I certainly have no "corner on the market" of knowledge or wisdom, especially when it concerns such a profound and involved question as that one. I do, however, have over fifty years in the ministry of the Gospel, having answered the call to preach on the last Sunday of April 1969 and felt it may be beneficial to share what I believe God has laid on my heart about that subject. It is by no means the "final word," but I hope it will be a clear challenge for the church to follow Jesus in service rather than "stay at Calvary" in complacency.

The world is descending into darkness, and it's taking modern religion with it. And this nightmare is not an isolated incident reserved for just one branch of religion or one particular faith. No, this phenomenon, this falling away, has infected both large and small. It is a tangible collapse of faith that has begun to spread everywhere. It's like a religious pandemic has crept into the farthest reaches of the body and infected every organ with its symptoms of doubt and disbelief, killing off the weak and making sick the once proud faithful. We cannot escape the fact that a religious nightmare has descended upon the world we live in, and there doesn't seem to be a way out. Or is there? The Pattern of Calvary explores the forgotten truths of the Bible and the many reasons why we are in the religious shape we are in. It asks the hard questions about our existence and relationship with the Creator, ultimately presenting a simple solution to a complex religious problem of truth and getting us back on course with our Creator. "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill."
