Excerpt from Caesar and Pompey in Greece: Selections From Caesar's Civil War, Book III To aid in the study of termination: a table is given containing some of the more common and most important. So far as I have observed, this feature is entirely new. Under each termination is placed a list of words taken from the text to illustrate its force as simply as possible. As continual repetition is necessary to fix the force of terminations, it seemed that a list, containing neither too many endings nor too many illustrations, would prove to be of use to both teacher and taught. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ...1 praetor: the word the Romans used to translate the Greek arpaTttybs, military governor. 33 7 succurratur: impersonal; 146. d; H. 302. 6. 33 11 scalas: scaling ladders. Some were like our common ladders. Some consisted of several parts which, when put together, formed one large ladder. Others were made entirely of ropes or leather, and had large iron hooks at the end with which to fasten them to the wall. Those mentioned in the text seem to have been constructed on the spot out of raw material. 33 11 musculosque: a sort of siied, much stronger than the vinea. Caesar describes one constructed to undermine the walls of Massilia. Two timbers were laid side by side on the ground, four feet apart, in which were set upright posts five feet high; these were joined together by rafters, and the whole was roofed over with timbers two feet thick, which were held in place by metal plates and nails. The roof was then covered with bricks and mortar, kept in place by pieces of wood fastened along the edges of the roof and projecting above it. The bricks and mortar would protect the mu sculus against fire but not against water, so they were covered with skins; but as the skins were not proof against fire, they were covered with rags, which would deaden the blows of the stones and would not readily burn. 33 12 crates: hurdles, fascines, --twigs or osiers interwoven or bound up in bundles. They were used in an assault to ward off the enemy's missiles, being placed over the soldier's head; in 10 23 Caesar uses them like plutei, as a shelter for the men to work behind, while intrenching themselves. Light ones were sometimes used to fill up moats outside the fortifications of a town, in order to facilitate the assaults of the besiegers. Pluteus. I 33 14...
