Excerpt from By the Sea, and Other Poems "This Our Brother" and two or three of the sonnets in the first part, and all the second part of this book, did not appear in the first edition. The rest, with here and there some trifling change, stands as before. I cannot pass this opportunity without expressing my happiness and surprise at finding myself in a second edition within so brief a time. The surprise is due, not to any want of confidence in what I have written, keenly as my own private criticism has often thrust at me, but to the discovery that I was wrong in thinking (as I did when the first edition was issued) that the poet whose themes are such as the passion of my life has set for my singing would have to rest content with the praise of his own conscience alone. To my great joy that has not been so; and these poems, to whose theme of hope for the future of the world's poor and oppressed I have given not only my song but the daily work of my life, have received a welcome far beyond expectation. Excerpt from The Sea: And Other Poems Great portion of this volume was com posed, and the whole of it prepared for the press, during a winter sojourn in the South of France. An obstinate attack of bronchitis and general debility rendered it necessary that I should seek a warmer climate. Debarred from the privilege of speaking, and forbidden to oc cupy my mind in much reading or study, I found the quiet hours passed in the preparation pleasant, and, I trust, profitable to my own mind. None of the poems have any merit. They are very simple and unpretentious. They are not printed for the public, but simply for my numerous relations and the many kind friends whose sympathy and correspondence cheered my season of trial. They will kindly overlook the many and great blemishes withvi. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Garden by the Sea, and Other Poems A Garden by the Sea. On high grey cliffs uplifted, A garden by the sea Is smiling in the sunshine, And softly sings to me. The roses chant in rapture Their madrigals apart, The lilies hymn the moonlight That lingers in their heart; The violets caressing Their mother earth, sing low The cradle songs she taught them In Eden long ago. The humming-birds, whose kisses A thousand loves may claim, Through sun and shade are flashing, In darts of lyric flame. And when the wind of ocean A song of Freedom sings, Its harp the swaying pine-trees, The flying spray its wings, - About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Songs of the Sea: With Other Poems Several of the following poems, and among them the ballad of Adelaide's Triumph, are now for the first time published. Others have appeared in different periodicals, with which the writer has been connected during the last ten years, and have met with a kind reception from the public. How far any of them may be deemed worthy of preservation, will be solved, probably, by the fate of this edition, which has been carefully reyised, and contains the first and only complete and authorized collection of. Throughout history, poets have felt the ancient pull of the sea, exploring the full range of mankind's nautical fears, dreams, and longings. The colorful legends of the sea-pirates and mermaids, phantom ships and the sunken city of Atlantis-have inspired as many imaginations as have the realities of lighthouses and shipwrecks, of icebergs and frothing foam and seaweed. This marvelous collection includes classics old and new, from Homer and Milton to Plath and Merwin. Here are Tennyson's seductive sea-fairies next to Poe's beloved Annabel Lee. Here is Coleridge's darkly brooding "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" alongside the grandeur of Shakespeare's "Full Fathom Five." And here is Masefield's "I must go down to the seas again" alongside Cavafy's "Ithaka" and Stevens's "The Idea of Order at Key West." In the wide variety of lyrics collected here-sonnets and sea chanteys, ballads and hymns and prayers-we feel the encompassing power of our planet's restless
