Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, 1848, Vol. 2 It is conceded that your ministers have written several able and learned works against unbelief, and in defence of religion but in these works they have only borrowed Catholic princi ples and arguments, conclusive when urged by us, but of no practical value when urged by them, because practically denied and refuted by their position outside of the Church, and by the other principles and arguments they must adopt and urge in their own defence. Actions speak louder than words. The rebel chief, in arms to overthrow his lawful sovereign, cannot preach loyalty with much efi'ect. His practical disloyalty more than neutralizes his speculative loyalty. The practical rejection of Catholicity by your ministers necessarily does more to spread infidelity and licentiousness than any Catholic principles and arguments they may urge can do to arrest their fatal progress. It is certain, and the experience of three hundred years has proved it, that Christianity is defensible only on Catholic ground, and every attempt to defend it on other grounds has failed. Philosophers have tried to defend it on philosophical grounds, but in doing so have only reduced it to a philosophy. Rationalists have attempted to do it on the ground of reason alone, and have obtained only the same result. Socialists andddmom'tiom to Protestants. Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, Vol. 1 Bible alone, - that precious gift of God to man, the word of God, the charter of our liberties, the source of redemption, the ground of the Christian's hope, carrying light and life, the blessings of truth, freedom, and civilization, wherever it goes and which you Papists, with characteristic cunning, lock up from the people, because you know full well, that, were they once to read it for themselves, they would make short work with the Pope and his minions, break their covenant with death and hell, and put an end to their blasphemies, idola tries, and oppressions. Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, Vol. 1: January, 1864 With this number we commence a new series of our Review. Henceforth the Review is to be national and sec ula1, devoted to philosophy, science, politics, literature, and the general interests of civilization, especially American civilization. It ceases to be a theological Review, and though it will defend religion, and prove itself in the prin ciples which govern it truly Christian, it will defend the special interests of the Catholic Church only as they are implied ln the freedom of conscience and the religious and civil liberty of the citizen. The Editor has not changed his faith, or abated ln his zeal for the Communion to which he has been warmly attached for the last twenty years, and whose doctrine and discipline he has labored as well as he could to explain and defend but, for reasons satisfactory to himself, he Withdraws his Review from the field of theologi. Cal discussion and sectarian controversy, and restricts it for the future to those great public questions and gene1al inter ests of Ch1istian civilization, which can be fully discussed without trenching upon auv ground debated between Catho lics and Protestants. Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, 1858, Vol. 6 I am glad, interposed De Bonneville, to find that France is still monarchical, and I prefer the Empire to the Republic. If Henri Cinq were on the throne instead of Napoleon, I should find no serious fault with the Imperial government or its general policy. My objection to Louis Napoleon is, that he is a usurper, and not the legitimate sovereign of France. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
