Excerpt from British Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fresh-Water Fishes It is hoped that this third volume of "The Abbey Nature Books" will be no less popular than the preceding volumes devoted to British Mammals and British Birds. A feature of this third book in the series is that practically every species included is illustrated, and these illustrations, together with the descriptive matter, will, it is hoped, result in more attention being paid to these classes of animals than heretofore. The Author has to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. Frank Gibson's "Superstitions about Animals," and to Mr. C. Tate Regan's admirable book on "The Fresh-Water Fishes of the British Isles," to which the reader is confidently referred for more detailed information concerning the third class of animals included in this volume. Excerpt from British Reptiles and Amphibians This little volume, dealing with the British Reptiles and Amphibians, may well find a place in the Peeps at Nature Series. Britain has few representatives of these two classes of animals, but their fewness in number has enabled the author to deal with each species at some length; and, besides, we have the additional advantage of being able to illustrate all but two of the British species in colour. We are indebted to Miss Scrivener for the capabie way in which she has prepared the drawings from which the coloured plates have been prepared. The reader's attention is par ticularly directed to the series of photographic repro ductions on Plates III., VI., VII., X., and XL, which illustrate admirably the story of the development of the frog. Excerpt from British Natural History Studies: Reptiles, Amphibians, Fishes, Etc The Common lizard.-this is the smallest of the three British lizards, and is a handsome little species. It feeds almost entirely on an insect dietary; is a good swimmer; produces its young alive, the egg hatching within its own body, and differing from the sand lizard in this respect. Hence this species is called viviparous, whilst the next species is called oviparous. These are most interesting points which the reader should not lose sight of. Three or four young ones are born sometimes more - and these are very dark in colour, almost black. The adult lizard is greenish-brown, has black or dark brown longitudinal bands, and a bright orange-yellow belly spotted with black. The Sand Lizard - The sand lizard is a much rarer species than its last - named relative. It resorts to the plains, and may be identified from the com mon lizard by having teeth and smaller scales. It varies a good deal in colour; brown in various shades tinged with green, white on belly, spotted minutely with black. On the back and sides there are rows of white spots which vary in number. The eggs, which number about twelve, are deposited in the sand, where they hatch unassisted by the parents.
