Excerpt from British Costume During XIX Centuries (Civil and Ecclesiastical) With some notable exceptions the representation of historical costume upon the stage is still almost in its ih fancy, so far as the periods anterior to the Tudor are con cerned, and this is most sincerely to be deplored, inasmuch as mediaaval costume has a charm and grace of its own which is quite unknown to post-reformation dress. By actual ex perience I have found upon more than one occasion that an audience pays much more critical and appreciative attention to a play which is costumed strictly in accordance with historical detail, and as such is duly advertised, than to one dressed in a pot-pourri of stage dresses, which are invariably a rechauffe of costumes authentic, conjectural, and mythical.
