Excerpt from Oil-Mixed Portland Cement Concrete The enormous growth of the American Portland cement industry, with. Its production Of 7 barrels Of cement in 1910 and 7 1 barrels in 1911, is striking evidence Of the widespread use Of this deservedly popular material of construction. Combined with sand and stone or gravel in the correct proportions and mixed with the proper amount of water, the resultant product - concrete - is a structural material of perhaps more universal adaptation than any other material now in use. Its application to foundations for heavy machinery, to dams, walls, bridge piers, tunnels, subways, and build ing blocks is well known. When properly reinforced with steel, its use is even more widely extended to the construction Of bridges, vats, sewers, water conduits, and numerous other classes of construction. The farmer has found concrete to be Of material benefit to him in building various farm structures which were formerly made Of more perishable materials._ Thus, when reinforced with steel wire or rods, fence posts may be made with an interminable life and at very low. Cost. It is also exceedingly well adapted to the construction Of water tanks, cisterns, silos, pavements, floors, buildings, feeding troughs, etc. Simplicity and ease of manufacture and manipulation in construction great strength and durability, and comparatively low cost are some of the considerations which render its application so universal. Excerpt from History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States: With Appendices Covering Progress of the Industry by Years and an Outline of the Organization and Activities of the Portland Cement Association What you are, speaks so loudly that people oftentimes do not hear what you say. The Cement Industry of the United States has established for itself a position of such permanence and importance in America's indus trial life, that neither arguments nor eulogies are needed to gain public recognition and appreciation for this great business. We may search the whole field of material virtues and yet find nothing that so commands our respect as does permanence. It is not the beauty of the Pyramids that holds the traveler in Egypt charmed, but it is the appeal their rugged endurance makes to his imagination. They appear to be something that connects today with yesterday - the present with the past - and while they may represent no more than a foolish waste of human effort, thev have the power to go on and on, unyielding even to the ceaseless attacks of the wearing elements and the sands of the desert. Cement means concrete; concrete means stone; and stone spells eternity, so far as our finite minds can comprehend. The development of methods to manufacture great quantities of synthetic stone has given our present civilization the durability it so much needed. The creation of a great Cement Industry has removed, in large degree, the serious menace to life of a coming timber famine. The rapid progress of science and engineer ing in our country has been made possible by our cement mills, which have given us the essential material on which to found our prosperity. Excerpt from Notes on Concrete and Works in Concrete Especially Written to Assist Those Engaged Upon Public Works In the following notes no particular reference is made to the manufacture, composition, or scientific testing of Portland cement, its use on the work being principally considered.
