Paper 1: Results are presented of an analytical study of the dynamic behavior of simple-span highway bridges traversed by heavy vehicles. Paper 2: Inasmuch as many highway bridges are now being built with elastomeric bearings, it was considered desirable to study the vibration effects of such bridges. Paper 3: The method and procedure used in a digital computer program are described to find horizontal and vertical movements of all joints of a truss, given the member stresses and the structure properties. Paper 4: Results are summarized of tests made to demonstrate the effect of details on the fatigue behavior of welded flexural members.

This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation and consulting bridge, structural, and research engineers. The synthesis describes the current state of the practice for determining dynamic impact factors for bridges. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and foreign sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board documents relevant background and recent information with regard to vehicular dynamic load effects on bridges. It provides details on the basic concepts of bridge dynamics, including identification of the main variables affecting bridge dynamic response. In addition, current code provisions for accounting for vehicular dynamic load effects for new bridge design and load evaluation of existing bridges are reported, including a discussion on the background of the provisions. Finally, a discussion of observed field problems associated with vehicular dynamic load effects, as obtained from the survey, are included.

The commercial operation of the bullet train in 1964 in Japan markedthe beginning of a new era for high-speed railways. Because of thehuge amount of kinetic energy carried at high speeds, a train mayinteract significantly with the bridge and even resonate with it undercertain circumstances. Equally important is the riding comfort of thetrain cars, which relates closely to the maneuverability of the trainduring its passage over the bridge at high speeds.

Provides a survey of the dynamic stresses in railway bridges under moving vehicles. This book investigates both bridge and moving railway vehicles and describes the effect of parameters, such as the speed of vehicles, track irregularities, on the dynamic behaviour of bridges, and is useful for civil and railway engineers and researchers.

Bridges’ Dynamics covers the historical review of research and introductory mathematical concepts related to the structural dynamics of bridges. The e-book explains the theory behind engineering aspects such as 1) dynamic loadings, 2) mathematical concepts (calculus elements of variations, the d’ Alembert principle, Lagrange’s equation, the Hamilton principle, the equations of Heilig, and the δ and H functions), 3) moving loads, 4) bridge support mechanics (one, two and three span beams), 5) Static systems under dynamic loading 6) aero-elasticity, 7) space problems (2D and 3D) and 8) absorb systems (equations governing the behavior of the bridge-absorber system). The e-book is a useful introductory textbook for civil engineers interested in the theory of bridge structures.
