The Sport of Bowls, or to be more precise, Lawn Bowls, as played in many countries throughout the world, gives a lot of pleasure, sporting challenge and comradeship to a great many people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Whilst this story is completely fictional it is based on some similar events which I and my bowling friends have experienced for ourselves in both Australia and the UK. The story follows two main characters as they participate in an 'Open Pairs' competition and are then joined by another friend for a 'Triples' event and finally by a fourth friend for two 'Open Fours' tournaments. We follow the highs and lows which bowls can bring, along with the good humour and banter which is ever present on the Bowling Green. Some say that Lawn Bowls is a game for the older generation, but I prefer to think of it as a game for all generations, but in which the older generation can still hold their own (well sometimes at least). Low temperature represents, together with drought and salt stress, one of the most important environmental constraints limiting the pro ductivity and the distribution of plants on the Earth. Winter survival, in particular, is a highly complex phenomenon, with regards to both stress factors and stress responses. The danger from winter cold is the result not only of its primary effect, i. e. the formation of ice in plant tissues; additional threats are presented by the freezing of water in and on the ground and by the load and duration ofthe snow cover. In recent years, a number of books and reviews on the subject of chilling and frost resistance in plants have appeared: all of these publications, however, concentrate principally on the mechanisms of injury and resistance to freezing at the cellular or molecular level. We are convinced that analysis of the ultrastructural and biochemical alterations in the cell and particularly in the plasma membrane during freezing is the key to understanding the limits of frost resistance and the mechanisms of cold acclimation. This is undoubtedly the immediate task facing those of us engaged in resistance research. It is nevertheless our opinion that, in addition to understanding the basic physiological events, we should be careful not to overlook the importance of the comparative aspects of the freezing processes, the components of stress avoidance and tolerance and the specific levels of resistance.

A groundbreaking new account of the author of The Spanish Tragedy that establishes him as a major Elizabethan dramatist Thomas Kyd (1558–1594) was a highly regarded dramatist and the author of The Spanish Tragedy, the first revenge tragedy and the most influential Elizabethan play. In this first full study of his life and works, Brian Vickers discusses Kyd’s accepted canon as well as three additional plays Vickers has newly identified as having been written by Kyd—exciting discoveries that establish him as a major dramatist. Thomas Dekker, a fellow Elizabethan dramatist, referred to “industrious Kyd,” which suggests a greater output than the three plays traditionally attributed to him—The Spanish Tragedy, Soliman and Perseda, and Cornelia. Kyd worked between 1585 and 1594, when the plague led to the anonymous publication of many plays because of the breakup of several London theatre companies. Researching this corpus, Vickers has identified Kyd’s authorship of three more plays: Arden of Faversham, the first domestic tragedy, King Leir and his three daughters, a tragicomedy that provided Shakespeare with his main source, and Fair Em, a love comedy. These attributions are based on two forms of evidence: unique similarities of plot between Kyd’s acknowledged and newly attributed plays and many unique phrases shared by all six plays as identified by modern software. Discussing all the plays in detail and placing them in biographical and historical context, Thomas Kyd offers a major reassessment of an underappreciated Elizabethan playwright.
