In The Healing Mind, Dr. Paul Martin, a renowned professor behavioral biology, asserts that Wolfe's words are closer to the truth than we might imagine. Long the stuff of poetry and folklore, there is increasing scientific evidence that the brain and the immune system are inextricably linked. Dr. Martin illustrates with remarkable clarity that biological and psychological links that do indeed exist between mind and body--links that have in intricately constructed by evolution over the millennia, links that, when frayed or severed, are the root cause of more problems that you might imagine. Drawing together the latest biological and medical findings, The Healing Mind explains how we can at last reconcile many commonplace notions about "psychosomatic" illness and stress with a modern scientific understanding of how the mind and body affect each other. Martin makes impressive use of literary references to illustrate the degree to which we commonly (and accurately) observe the link between health and psyche. Here, presented in a fascinating and uniquely accessible manner, are the latest scientific solutions to some ancient puzzles concerning the relationship between brain, behavior, immunity, and disease.

This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Dr. Tim Hennessy has skillfully drawn on his life experiences to put together this new book he has written. Recalled to Health functions as both a personal memoir of his path to becoming a doctor and a useful medical guide to achieving and keeping good health. Written over a five-year period in between his work as a doctor and his other professional and personal pursuits, Dr. Hennessy says the initial impetus for it came from his bimonthly e-mail health newsletter, H-mail: Medical Education Made Easy. Self-described as conservative with medicine, Hennessy's focus for this book is to promote freedom by inspiring one and all to live healthier lives, in the process becoming less dependent on medications and the flawed healthcare system, and more emboldened to live life to its fullest, unimpeded by the physical constraints of poor health. By providing a medical foundation that will lead to a better understanding of medical topics, the doctor believes that Recalled to Health can empower readers to take charge of their own health. Cholesterol, blood pressure, diet and weight management, exercise, sleeping habits, and the role of nature in health are some of the topics discussed in full here, along with suggestions for optimum actions, behaviors, and treatments. Each of the chapters end with a helpful summary of tips, and the back of the book contains numerous, fully cited references listed by chapters as well as a full index. You can use this first-rate new book to help maintain your present good health, or you can use it to help reclaim your former good health. Either way, it will help you strengthen your mind so you can strengthen your body. And what more can anyone ask of a book on health? Book jacket.

East meets West in this extraordinary guide to natural healing by a prominent doctor of Chinese medicine and the author of Secrets of Longevity. Dr. Mao's philosophy is simple: We all have a built-in healing ability, so why not try to activate it with natural means before we resort to drugs and invasive procedures? For the common cold, why not exploit the power of garlic, ginger, and the herb astragalus instead of taking cold medicine that simply replaces symptoms with side effects? For insomnia, why not try to find a long-term solution through acupressure or feng shui instead of popping sleeping pills, which don't treat the source of the problem? Chinese medicine sees well-being as a result of a balanced life, not just a healthy body. In Part One of Secrets of Self-Healing, Dr. Mao explains that healing food and herbs, exercise, a positive emotional life, a suitable living environment, and spiritual growth are all essential to vitality and lasting health. Using examples of his own patients' experiences, he demonstrates: - How negative emotions can make us ill - How clutter in our homes can create imbalances in our bodies - How Eastern and Western medicine can work together to fight cancer Then, in Part Two, he reveals detailed home remedies for seventy common ailments, such as sore throat, allergies, high blood pressure, sunburn, insomnia, memory loss, and jet lag. Inspirational yet practical, Secrets of Self-Healingwill put readers on the path to a balanced and healthy life.
