DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn Missionary Interests, David Golding and Christopher Cannon Jones bring together works about Protestant and Mormon missionaries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, charting new directions for the historical study of these zealous evangelists for their faith. Despite their sectarian differences, both groups of missionaries shared notions of dividing the world categorically along the lines of race, status, and relative exoticism, and both employed humanitarian outreach with designs to proselytize. American missionaries occupied liminal spaces: between proselytizer and proselytized, feminine and masculine, colonizer and colonized. Taken together, the chapters in Missionary Interests dismantle easy characterizations of missions and conversion and offer an overlooked juxtaposition between Mormon and Protestant missionary efforts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Tolkiens desk, Malcolm Muggeridges typewriter, Madame Blavatskys tiara, the bones of a hulking mastodon, Billy Grahams traveling pulpit, and Tyndale House, publishers of the best-selling Left Behind series? Where will you find students, mystics, theologians, doctors, authors, actors, and musicians living in harmony? In Wheaton. Located 26 miles west of Chicago, the All America City boasts excellent schools, exquisite old homes, safe streets, and fine museums. Though Horace Greeley is credited with uttering the immortal Go west, young man! the sentiment had been acted upon much earlier by questing pioneers, many of whom halted in the middle plains, sensing terrific potential in the rich black soil of Illinois. Among these were Warren and Jesse Wheaton and Erastus Gary from Pomfret, Connecticut. Seeking suitable land for farming, they settled and constructed a mill. From there they built cabins and harvested spring crops. Soon there was a village of a few hundred, connected by train to the farthest reaches of the nation. Now there is a city of 55,000 residents.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKMost returned missionaries say that their missions have been the most rewarding experience of their lifetime. It is no wonder: their maturity, testimony, and knowledge grow phenomenally. There is no greater feeling than to teach, convert, and baptize a new family into the Church. The miraculous changes that occur in people as they accept, live, and progress in the Gospel are worth all of the missionaries' personal sacrifices. If we lovingly encourage and prepare our sons to serve full-time missions, they will accept the challenge. They will happily prepare themselves and look forward with great anticipation to serve the Lord anywhere in the world for two years. If you do the things suggested in Mission Accomplished, you will have successful missionaries who serve honorable missions. You will be showered with never-expected blessings. Indeed, the windows of heaven will open wide to pour out innumerable blessings from on high. I recommend the following to parents of all currently serving missionaries: Pray for them daily Write to them weekly; keep letters positive and encouraging Send them periodic care packages Do not call them unless permitted by the mission president Help them complete an honorable mission If you do these things, you will reap blessings galore. Your missionaries rely on the support they receive from home. They need your support. They look forward to your support. Don't let them down.
