DOWNLOAD EBOOKPersonal reflections on the vital role of the notebook in creative writing, from Dorianne Laux, Sue Grafton, John Dufresne, Kyoko Mori, and more. This collection of essays by established professional writers explores how their notebooks serve as their studios and workshops—places to collect, to play, and to make new discoveries with language, passions, and curiosities. For these diverse writers, the journal also serves as an ideal forum to develop their writing voice, whether crafting fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. Some include sample journal entries that have since developed into published pieces. Through their individual approaches to keeping a notebook, the contributors offer valuable advice, personal recollections, and a hearty endorsement of the value of using notebooks to document, develop, and nurture a writer’s creative spark.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe voice of a generation, speaking on issues of mortality, body image, health and dreams deferred, Magnificent Obesity recounts one woman’s effort to look honestly and compassionately at her obesity through the lenses of anxiety, addiction, aging and agnosticism. Although things don’t always turn out the way she’d hoped or planned, Martha’s indomitable spirit and her conviction that it’s never too late to grow up, that it is possible to feel born again at any age, and that there is no sell-by date on dreams will inspire anyone who yearns to rewrite their story and take their own magnificent leap into a life lived with passion, purpose, and authentic power. When Martha Moravec shows up at the ER with severe anxiety, she does not expect to be told she is having a heart attack at age 55. What follows is a journey of mind, body, and soul as the shock accelerates a tolerable midlife crisis into a race to close the gap between where she is headed in life and the very different place she wants to be. A woman living alone, Martha recruits a team of doctors, therapists, and priests, helpers, healers, and friends from the tight-knit weave of small town life in southern Vermont. The patience and dedication of the people she calls “angels we can see” proves that it takes a village to raise a happy, self-actualized adult. As she addresses childhood trauma, panic attacks and phobias, addictive behaviors and an obsessive fear of death, Martha walks an often painful, always illuminating path in her fight to recover her physical, mental, and spiritual health.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKStone is one of the oldest building materials, and its conservation ranks as one of the most challenging in the field. The use of alkoxysilanes in the conservation of stone can be traced as far back as 1861, when A. W. von Hoffman suggested their use for the deteriorating limestone on the Houses of Parliament in London. Alkoxysilane-based formulations have since become the material of choice for the consolidation of stone outdoors.^l This volume, the first to cover comprehensively alkoxysilanes in stone consolidation, synthesizes the subject's vast and extensive literature, which ranges from production of alkoxysilanes in the nineteenth century to the extensive contributions from sol-gel science in the 1980s and 90s. Included are a historical overview, an annotated bibliography, and discussions of the following topics: the chemistry and physics of alkoxysilanes and their gels; the influence of stone type; commercial and noncommercial formulations; practice; lab and field evaluation of service life; and recent developments. This book is designed for conservators, scientists, and preservation architects in the field of stone conservation and will also serve as an indispensable introduction to the subject for students of art conservation and historic preservation.
