As we have already stated, the ponds which have been studied especially, are parts of the long sloughs which have been long enough isolated to show their efficiency in supporting the fishes which they now contain. The fishes found in the Separated ponds are shown in Table XXI. (p. 17) of the present paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Biological Bulletin of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Vol. 36: Woods Hole, Mass Fol first intimated that the membrane lifts from the egg as a wave dwelling on the rapidity with which the process is com pleted. Unfortunately he used eggs under pressure. Mem brane formation as a progressive wave beginning at the site of sperm-entrance has been observed by Wilson who, however, is not at all sure. He says (in a footnote): I have often observed that the formation of the membrane, in T oxopneustes, proceeds like a wave from the entrance-point around the periphery, but this is often irregular. Ries followed the fertilization with the cinematograph; he observed changes which indicated that the membrane forms first at one point. Excerpt from Biological Bulletin of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass, Vol. 19: June November, 1910 The past decade has witnessed greatly renewed interest in the problems of sex determination, due very largely to the study of hybridization and the broad application of the results. Con currently the investigation of the germ cells has increased in amount in a geometrical ratio; never before have these cells so fully engaged the thoughts of biologists, and our knowledge of the complex chromosomal activities has increased to an extent unpredicted.
