Excerpt from Biographical Sketches in Cornwall, Vol. 1 of 3 Notwithstanding the proverbial taunt which refers us for wise men to the East, there is no doubt that Cornwall has been emi nently prolific in Genius and Learning. What County (said the gentleman who favoured me wit memoranda Toupiana)-what County besides, has ever ranked among its natives two Presidents of the Royal Society, one of whom was known throughout. Europe for his talents? And in Poetry, have we not Dr. \volcot; in painting, Opic in learning, Tonp, Whitaker Sec. Andin arms, a host of distinguished officers? I fire always at the charge of Com wall being barren in talents: for, though I have not myself the honour of being a native, I am most anxious to assist any one who contem plates commemorating the deeds of her sons. In sketching our W'orthies, my attempt is no more than the humble effort to furnish ma terials for abler hands. For the present, these little unambitious volumes may be taken as a Supplement to my Cornwall-history. And as two hundred copies only are printed, there are so few will make their way beyond the Tamar, that I shall scarcely exclaim with the poet: Sine me liber! Ibis in urbem. Cornwall, a land of unique and original characters, has a rich history of strange events and notable people. From the mineral wealth that attracted thousands of men underground to the wild coast that bred hardy seamen and smugglers, S. Baring-Gould's 'Cornish Characters and Strange Events' chronicles the stories of lesser-known luminaries whose tales of political intrigue, religious fanaticism, and piracy are full of captivating and extraordinary experiences. As the author puts it, Cornwall is a land of fascinating mysteries and legends, from tales of fairies to the haunting story of Anne Jefferies, and this book is here to present these stories to you.
