The goal of this project was to determine the level of genetic diversity and purity of 14 putative redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri) populations within a fine-scale geographic region in the upper East Fork Owyhee River watershed of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation. Tissue samples from fin clips were collected by Tribal staff from the sample populations of redband/rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss spp.) and/or their hybrids; the Tribes subcontracted with University of Idaho’s Center for Salmonid and Freshwater Species at Risk for the genetic lab analysis (see Attachment 1 for their report). Sample populations were screened for detectable levels of introgressive hybridization arising from possible admixtures of hatchery-reared coastal rainbow trout (O.m. irideus) with native redband trout. Six of the 14 sampled populations show no indication of introgressive hybridization, indicating populations of native redband trout in these locations.
