Extraordinary people marked 'not normal' come from all different walks of life. For far too long, a shroud of darkness was thrown over those who've had boundless potential to transcend greatness; shunned and cast out through the misjudgment forced upon them. People enduring isolation from being trapped inside their own minds. People labeled with an ASD-Autism Spectrum Disorder. Seeds of greatness cannot be cultivated through judgment and condemnation. Imagine a world never having heard the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Never seeing the extraordinary art of Michelangelo? What if Sir Isaac Newton hadn't discovered gravity, and laws of motion that would be relevant 300 years later? And for all the writers out there...were you aware that Lewis Carroll-author of 'Alice in Wonderland'-fell under the umbrella of Autism? So to all of you, who are reading this, ask yourself... "Is Autism a disorder, or is it a gift?" Through their short stories and poetry, a collection of talented authors have tackled that question.

On April 1, 1865, the steamboat Bertrand, a sternwheeler bound from St. Louis to Fort Benton in Montana Territory, hit a snag in the Missouri River and sank twenty miles north of Omaha. The crew removed only a few items before the boat was silted over. For more than a century thereafter, the Bertrand remained buried until it was discovered by treasure hunters, its cargo largely intact. This book categorizes some 300,000 artifacts recovered from the Bertrand in 1968, and also describes the invention, manufacture, marketing, distribution, and sale of these products and traces their route to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory. The ship and its contents are a time capsule of mid-nineteenth-century America, rich with information about the history of industry, technology, and commerce in the Trans-Missouri West. In addition to enumerating the items the boat was transporting to Montana, and offering a photographic sample of the merchandise, Switzer places the Bertrand itself in historical context, examining its intended use and the technology of light-draft steam-driven river craft. His account of steamboat commerce provides multiple insights into the industrial revolution in the East, the nature and importance of Missouri River commerce in the mid-1800s, and the decline in this trade after the Civil War. Switzer also introduces the people associated with the Bertrand. He has unearthed biographical details illuminating the private and social lives of the officers, crew members, and passengers, as well as the consignees to whom the cargo was being shipped. He offers insight into not only the passengers’ reasons for traveling to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory, but also the careers of some of the entrepreneurs and political movers and shakers of the Upper Missouri in the 1860s. This unique reference for historians of commerce in the American West will also fascinate anyone interested in the technology and history of riverine transport.

I can sit for hours over a cup of tea and talk to Phyllis about almost any topic. She is such a great storyteller, and there is always a lesson to be learned. Phylliss new book is so much like her personality, full of mirth, a history lesson, nurturing words, and a brief glimpse into a remarkable mind. The story of Fifty-Four made me smile and remember what I was thinking at that age and what I could expect to come to mind as I move into my next phase of life (Dr. Joye M. Carter, author of My Strength Comes from Within: An Autobiography; I Speak for the Dead; and Let Me Give You a Peace of My Mind). Beyond the Wind Chimes is a poignant collection of short stories written by the talented Phyllis Adair Ward, author of Wind Chimes and Promises. I found myself wiping a tear or two or simply scratching my head. The stories are whimsical, thought-provoking, and a very easy read. It is a must read accompanied by a cup of coffee or tea (Beatrice Toney Bailey, author of Farewell, My Friend). If you love Phyllis, you will love this book. If you dont know Phyllis, read it, and your heart will be touched. She has written poems, stories, essays, and commentaries infused with warmth and connection. Meet Miss Lorraine and Dr. Adams if you want a heart-warmer. Meet mothers and grandmothers, cousins, aunts, and uncles. You will find humor, kindness, and tragedy, along with gratitude for the miracles of living. Here is a fine model for aging gracefully with only a few complaints. Phyllis succeeds in her goal for this book, I want to write acceptable or unacceptable words. I want to empty out my heart and soul on paper. Thats my gift to the world. The only one I really have. She gives abundantly. (Linda Caldwell Lee, author of Mystics, Me and Moby: A Spiritual Road Trip and What Happiness Required).
