Excerpt from First Lessons in German The lessons that constitute this first volume were chosen from material prepared for classes during a period of eleven years (1881 - 1892) and after they were printed and used experimentally for a period of four years (january 1894 - February it was thought safe to say that, in the form in which they now appear, they may be used advantageously in classes of adults and also in classes of children of over eleven years of age. In order to produce satisfactory results in classes of adults of somewhat slow comprehension the lesson had to be gone over more than once in the same session.
