The representation and experience of embodiment is a central preoccupation of Samuel Beckett’s drama, one that he explored through diverse media. McMullan investigates the full range of Beckett’s dramatic canon for stage, radio, television and film, including early drama, mimes and unpublished fragments. She examines how Beckett’s drama composes and recomposes the body in each medium, and provokes ways of perceiving, conceiving and experiencing embodiment that address wider preoccupations with corporeality, technology and systems of power. McMullan argues that the body in Beckett’s drama reveals a radical vulnerability of the flesh, questioning corporeal norms based on perfectible, autonomous or invulnerable bodies, but is also the site of a continual reworking of the self, and of the boundaries between self and other. Beckett’s re-imagining of the body presents embodiment as a collaborative performance between past and present, flesh and imagination, self and other, including the spectator / listener.

In this dissertation, "Stage, Body, Text: Beckett's and Weiss's Theaters of Embodiment," I compare theories of acting and spectatorship in theatre and film, focusing on representations of the human body in the work of Samuel Beckett and Peter Weiss. I argue that film and theatre acting must be theorized in specific relation to each other, and that media comparisons should be a central aspect of both theatre and film criticism. Through close readings of Beckett's and Weiss's work, I explicate the intimacies between theatre and film acting and spectatorship; the role of the written text as it relates to embodied representation; and tropes of bodily fragmentation and alienation that became newly relevant in the 1950s and 1960s in Western Europe. Using a comparative media framework, my study treats these theoretical approaches to film and theater acting as being critically similar, reevaluating different concepts of the performing body in film genre studies, playwriting styles and acting systems, and in specific experiments with text, body, and technology in modernist theatre.

In Agency and Embodiment, Carrie Noland examines the ways in which culture is both embodied and challenged through the corporeal performance of gestures. Arguing against the constructivist metaphor of bodily inscription dominant since Foucault, Noland maintains that kinesthetic experience, produced by acts of embodied gesturing, places pressure on the conditioning a body receives, encouraging variations in cultural practice that cannot otherwise be explained. Drawing on work in disciplines as diverse as dance and movement theory, phenomenology, cognitive science, and literary criticism, Noland argues that kinesthesia—feeling the body move—encourages experiment, modification, and, at times, rejection of the routine. Do liminal embodied experiences such as illness, death and dying affect literary form? In recent years, the concept of embodiment has been theorized from various perspectives. Gender studies have been concerned with the cultural implications of embodiment, arguing to move away from viewing the body as a prediscursive phenomenon to regarding it as an acculturated body. Age studies have extended this view to the embodied experience of ageing, while drawing attention to the ways in which the ageing body, through its materiality and plasticity, restricts the possibilities of (de)constructing subjectivity.
