Excerpt from Bearings: Design, Friction, Lubrication, Bearing Metals A journal should be designed of such a size and form that it will run cool, and with practically no wear. The question both of heating and wear is one of friction, and in order for us to understand the princi ples upon which the design of bearings should be based, we must first understand the underlying principles of friction. Friction is defined as that force? Acting between two bodies at their surface of contact, when they are pressed together, which tends to prevent their sliding one upon the other. The energy used in overcoming this force of friction, appears at the rubbing surfaces as heat, and is ordinarily dissipated by conduction through the two bodies. The force of friction, and hence the amount of heat generated under any given circumstances, can be greatly reduced by the introduction of an oily or greasy sub stance between the rubbing surfaces. The oil or grease seems to act in the same way that a great number of minute balls would, reducing the friction and wear, and thus preventing the overheating and couse quent destruction of the parts. On this account, bearings of all kinds are always lubricated. Thus the question of journal friction involves the further question of lubrication. Part of the fifth edition of the classic Rolling Bearing Analysis, this book builds a basic understanding of the fundamentals underlying the use, design, and performance of rolling bearings. It serves as a stand-alone introduction cutting across the array of disciplines necessary to evaluate and comprehend the performance and behavior of all types of rolling bearings. The authors derive the mathematics and theories underlying catalog values given by manufacturers and lead you from the various types of bearings through bearing geometry, applied loading, internal load distribution, deformation, functional performance, and structural materials. It makes an ideal introductory textbook as well as a practical field reference for professionals.

Metal-Reinforced Ceramics covers the principle of metal-fiber-reinforced ceramics, a well-known topic in the field of reinforced concrete. Much of the work that has been done has remained unpublished, hidden in industrial company archives due to the commercial sensitivity associated with the respective technologies that prevailed at the time, which no longer applies today. This book will discuss advanced technologies that have largely been undocumented before in a broad range of industrial application areas, with updates on alumina, silicon carbide, boron carbide, tungsten carbide, fused silica, and carbon-based ceramics which are hard, heat resistant, wear resistant, and chemically durable. - Provides detailed information on fundamental principles, advanced processing technologies and industrial applications - Features comprehensive industrial knowledge not usually in the public domain from the author's experience spanning more than three decades - Features armor ceramics, bioceramics, aerospace, mining and architectural ceramic applications

Vintage and Classic Tractor Restoration is a complete guide to the subject, looking at how to initially purchase a tractor, through private means or at auction, and then how to restore it back to its former glory, as it would have looked when it left the factory. It is even possible to preserve a classic tractor in its working condition, which has a unique appeal to some tractor collectors and in some ways is harder than a full restoration to undertake. Practical techniques have been amply illustrated throughout the book, ranging from the simple use of a lathe or milling machine to the making from scratch of various tools useful in restoration work. Rather than just replacing items such as carburettor, starter motor or dynamo, practical advice is given on how to test and rebuild these compondents back to full operation. Fifty-two practical picture spreads show techniques suitable for restorers of all levels of skill. Contents: Setting up the workshop and making specialist tools; Finding a tractor to restore; Engine and fuel; Electrical systems; Transmission and brakes; Wheels, tyres and steering; Hydraulics and the three-point linkage; Metalwork; Painting and finishing. Aimed at serious tractor enthusiasts and agricultural machinery engineers and fully illustrated wth 1100 colour photographs.
