The Belwin Student Instrumental Course is a course for individual instruction and class instruction of like instruments, at three levels, for all band instruments. Each book is complete in itself, but all books are correlated with each other. Although each book can be used separately, all supplementary books should be used as companion books with the method.
Each Belwin 21st Century Band Method video is introduced by Wynton Marsalis, and a motivational talk to students and families is given by Jack Bullock. For each instrument, there are demonstrations by Anthony Maiello of breathing and forming an embouchure, assembling, holding and caring for the instrument and producing a sound. First notes and instrument workouts with helpful techniques by various artists/clinicians are presented, along with rhythmic training by Jack Bullock. Unique to the video are play-along duets and performance pieces (videotaped from the student's perspective) with Anthony Maiello and a middle school band. This tape is an incredible motivational tool to keep students involved. This title is available in SmartMusic.

Sight-reading is an important aspect of making music and should in some form become a regular part of a student's routine each time they play their instrument. Regular sight-reading helps the pupil to gain greater confidence when approaching any new piece of music for the first time. Schott's Sight-Reading books aims to establish the habit early in every student's learning process and the emphasis is on providing idiomatic tunes and structures for the specific instruments rather than sterile sight-reading exercises. Starting from very easy pieces with familiar shapes and rhythms, the range of notes, keys and rhythms gradually develops. In addition to this, each section of the books concludes with duets and accompanied pieces allowing the student to gain experience of sight-reading within the context of ensemble playing. Accompaniment exercises can be found at the end of the piano books.
Six solos in each book, with piano accompaniment, for all the standard band instruments. Each book is correlated to the method and progresses accordingly. "Foundations for Superior Performance" is designed to help structure the daily rehearsal and advance the performance level of the ensemble. The primary goal is to offer a framework of exercises and routine drills that will facilitate the mastery of essential playing fundamentals. Different skill levels have been integrated into this book to meet the needs of the inexperienced player, and, at the same time, challenge the most advanced.
Level One of this method is comprised of books for all the primary band instruments plus electric bass and guitar. Motivational aspects are emphasized, such as using frequent duets and rounds, popular tunes as well as classical, traditional, folk, and other styles, and "Songs Just for the Fun of It," which appear at strategic learning intervals. Most of all, the Level One book can be completed in just one year, which encourages students to want to learn more. Lessons are carefully sequenced, and include in-depth rhythm study, consistent reinforcement of topics newly presented, theory exercises, and points on individual instrument needs. The conductor's score includes lesson plans and teaching suggestions correlated with the National Standards for Arts Education. Three complete concerts are included in Level One.
