Excerpt from Basic Ideas in Religion: Or Apologetic Theism The importance of a philosophical study of Apologetics cannot be over-estimated, for doubt, flippant or earnest, is in the very air, and the student should be made familiar with its myriad forms ere they arise in practical experience. The many references and quotations will explain themselves. The theological professor of today labors under a certain odium. He is popularly supposed to be biased, incapable of fairness, and seldom qualified to discuss the scientific and philosophic problems which arise in modem Apologetics. He must, therefore, fortify every statement and argument by recognized authorities. The literature in the vast field of modern Apologetics is vital and varied, historical, philosophical and scientific. The Christian leader must study thoroughly and with sympathy the grounds and manifestation of every form of doubt in the perplexed believer and the honest sceptic. The writer trusts his own position will be made plain, that Christianity is essentially the response of the spirit in faith and self-surrender to the revelation of God in Christ, and not the conclusion of any process of intellectual analysis and reasoning, though such work of the intellect is indispensable to the religious leader who would sympathize with the sad questionings of honest doubt and meet the assault of philosophical and scientific unbelief. The scepticism of today is often courteous in tone and serious in spirit, but it is deadly in intent and more widespread than ever before. It strikes at the foundation principles of all faith in God and man. Its victory would mean the death of the spirit of religion itself. Spiritual faith does not spring from nor rest on reasoning, but neither can it thrive apart from reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Comprising groundbreaking dialogues by many of the most prominent scholars in Christian apologetics and the philosophy of religion, this volume offers a definitive treatment of central questions of Christian faith. The essays are ecumenical and broadly Christian, in the spirit of C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, and feature lucid and up-to-date material designed to engage readers in contemporary theistic and Christian issues. Beginning with dialogues about God's existence and the coherence of theism and then moving beyond generic theism to address significant debates over such specifically Christian doctrines as the Trinity and the resurrection of Jesus, Debating Christian Theism provides an ideal starting point for anyone seeking to understand the current debates in Christian theology.

"The Christian world view," contends the author, "both needs and embodies a thoroughgoing, rational apologetic as a manifestation of its relevance to the contemporary mind. . . . Christian faith should be defended in terms of criteria which center in rational objectivity as the norm of truth and evaluation." The author, who stands in the tradition of Aquinas, Butler, Orr, and Tennant, deals first with the problem of epistemological approach (part 1). Then he tackles the apologetic of natural revelation, first setting forth the inadequacy of every major alternate to rational empiricism (part 2), then demonstrating the existence of the God of theism (part 3). Each chapter is well outlined, and these outlines appear together in an "Analytical Table of Contents." This feature, as well as a bibliography and index, makes this a useful textbook for courses in apologetics and philosophy.

The apostle Peter urged his readers to give a reason for the hope that is within them. In a day when even the concept of truth is questioned, Corduan gives reasons for the truth of historic Christian faith and argues that being able to give reasons for one's faith is possible, desirable, and something laypersons can learn.

It has never been more important to articulate the wonder and enchantment of the Christian message. Yet the traditional approaches of apologetics are often outmoded in an age of profound disenchantment and distraction, unable to meet this pressing need. This winsome apologetics book for a new generation makes the case that Christianity offers a compelling explanatory framework for making sense of our world. Pastor and writer Gavin Ortlund believes it is essential to appeal not only to the mind but also to the heart and the imagination as we articulate the beauty of the gospel. Why God Makes Sense in a World That Doesn't reimagines four classical theistic arguments--cosmological, teleological, moral, and Christological--making a cumulative case for God as the best framework for understanding the storied nature of reality. The book suggests that Christian theism can explain such things as the elegance of math, the beauty of music, and the value of love. It is suitable for use in classes yet accessibly written, making it a perfect resource for churches and small groups.
