A narrative history of the craft cocktail renaissance, written by a New York Times cocktail writer and one of the foremost experts on the subject. A Proper Drink is the first-ever book to tell the full, unflinching story of the contemporary craft cocktail revival. Award-winning writer Robert Simonson interviewed more than 200 key players from around the world, and the result is a rollicking (if slightly tipsy) story of the characters—bars, bartenders, patrons, and visionaries—who in the last 25 years have changed the course of modern drink-making. The book also features a curated list of about 40 cocktails—25 modern classics, plus an additional 15 to 20 rediscovered classics and classic contenders—to emerge from the movement.

At last—the newest nail-biting Kera Van Brocklin mystery/thriller by Golden Crown Literary Society nominee Jody Valley. Feeling depressed and needing a change in her life, Private Investigator Kera Van Brocklin’s identical twin, Deidre, decides to clear her head by taking a job with a small adventure cruise company in Alaska. When Kera learns that Deidre has been seriously injured, she immediately flies to Alaska—only to find her sister unconscious and unable to communicate. Hospital and senior cruise staff try to convince her that Deidre’s fall off a steep cliff was either a tragic accident or a botched suicide attempt. Knowing that Deidre wasn’t suicidal and had a terrible fear of heights, Kera suspects something more sinister. But what? With only a few days left of the cruise, Kera devises a risky plan to join the ship with her partner, Mandy, so that they can determine what really happened to her sister. Now trapped on a cruise filled with people they can’t trust and surrounded by the frigid Alaskan waters, Kera and Mandy are about to discover that Deidre’s “accident” is just the tip of the iceberg—and they have created their own personal Titanic. A Kera Van Brocklin Series Book 3.

First published in the 1860s, Harry Johnson's "Bartenders' Manual" is part of the classic bar-books and one of its oldest exemplar. The author has been one of the first bartenders who not only had general and wise thoughts about his profession, he also commited his experiences and opinions to paper and wrote a teaching book for beginners and professionals. Doing this, he layed the foundation for following generations and stands beside Jerry Thomas at the beginning of a long list of famous bartenders. In his book Harry Johnson carries the reader into times where it was obviously necessary to remind bartenders not to chew on a toothpick or a cigar when on a job interview, not to spit on the floor or pursue other bad habits. He gives advise how to conduct a bar as well as how to treat employees and guests, how to handle beer-casks and wine-bottles, what stock is needed in a bar or restaurant, how to keep the business books and much more. The second half of the book contains recipes for cocktails, punches, bowls and other drinks famous in USA and Europe during this time. There you can also find the presumably first mention of the Martini cocktail as well as instruction of how to mix absinth and chill champagne. The Bartenders' Manual is not only a window to the past, it also shows how professional some bartenders of that time pursued their business - a fact we almost forget or ignore as we connect the USA of the 19. century with dusty saloons and dirty beer-glasses. Some parts of the book may seem out of date (who is still using blocks of ice or keeps guspidors for his guests?) but it is still a must-have for professionals and enthusiastic hobby-barkeepers and gives precious insights of the beginning of bar-culture.

In this ground-breaking empirical study, George Rigakos looks at the relation between consumption, security, and risk and challenges the idea of nightclubs as places of liberation and personal expression.

At nineteen years old, Nicole C. Kear's biggest concern is choosing a major--until she walks into a doctor's office in midtown Manhattan and gets a life-changing diagnosis. She is going blind, courtesy of an eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa, and has only a decade or so before Lights Out. Instead of making preparations as the doctor suggests, Kear decides to carpe diem and make the most of the vision she has left. She joins circus school, tears through boyfriends, travels the world, and through all these hi-jinks, she keeps her vision loss a secret. When Kear becomes a mother, just a few years shy of her vision's expiration date, she amends her carpe diem strategy, giving up recklessness in order to relish every moment with her kids. Her secret, though, is harder to surrender - and as her vision deteriorates, harder to keep hidden. As her world grows blurred, one thing becomes clear: no matter how hard she fights, she won't win the battle against blindness. But if she comes clean with her secret, and comes to terms with the loss, she can still win her happy ending. Told with humor and irreverence, Now I See You is an uplifting story about refusing to cower at life's curveballs, about the power of love to triumph over fear. But, at its core, it's a story about acceptance: facing the truths that just won't go away, and facing yourself, broken parts and all.

Allen Flesser, the man who molested William when he was nine, had been arrested on other sexual abuse charges and released due to lack of evidence.
