Excerpt from Bacon's Essays With Introduction, Notes, and Index, Vol. 1 of 2 By way of illustrating Bacon's style and method, the ten Essays of 1597 are printed (and, in accordance with the principle stated above, in their original Spelling) below the corresponding Essays of a.d. 1625. The comparison of these may furnish a useful exercise in composition but it has not been thought necessary to add in full the edition of a.d. 1612, some account of which will, however, be found in the Notes, and in the Appendix in the second volume. Excerpt from Bacon's Essays: Edited With Introduction and Notes What Bacon meant by the word 'essay' he has told us himself. 'the want of leisure, ' he says, 'hath made me choose to write certain brief notes, set down rather significantly than curiously, which I have called essays. The word is late, but the thing is ancient. For Seneca's Epistles to Lucilius, if one mark them well, are but Essays, - that is, dispersed meditations, though conveyed in the form of Epistles.' Excerpt from Bacon's Essays With Introduction, Notes, and Index, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of the present edition of Bacon's Essays is to illustrate them as far as possible, not merely by disconnected notes, but by a continuous Introduction, bringing to bear upon the Essays such knowledge of Bacon's thoughts, as can be derived from his life and works. The basis of this Introduction is, of course, the edition of Bacon's Works issued by Mr. Ellis and Mr. Spedding; and the 'Letters and Life' recently completed by Mr. Spedding. Allusions and textual difficulties are explained by notes; but the writer's experience, while reading the Essays with a class of advanced pupils, led him to the conviction that, for the proper understanding of the Essays, more is wanted than mere annotation, however accurate and judicious. Bacon's Essays can hardly be understood without reference to Bacon's life. The text adopted is generally that of the accurate and scholar-like edition of Mr. Aldis Wright; but I have ventured to depart from his example in the matter of spelling and punctuation. Certainly there be that delight in giddiness, and count it a bondage to fix a belief; affecting free-will in thinking, as well as in acting, And, though the sects of philosophers of that kind be gone, yet there 5 remain certain discoursing wits which are of the same veins; though there be not so much blood in them as was in those of the ancients. But it is not only the difficulty and labour which men take in finding out of truth-- nor, again, that, when it is found, it imposeth upon 10 men's thoughts -- that doth bring lies in favour; but a natural though corrupt love of the lie itself. One of the later school of the Grecians examineth the matter, and is at a stand to think what should be in it, that men should love lies, where neither they make for pleasure, 15 as with poets, nor with advantage, as with the merchant, but for the lie's sake. But I cannot tell: this same truth Is a naked and open daylight, that doth not show the masques and mummeries, and triumphs of the world, half so stately and daintily as candle-lights. Truth may 20 perhaps come to the price of a pearl, that sheweth best by day; but it will not rise to the price of a diamond or carbuncle that sheweth best in varied lights. A mixture of a lie doth ever add pleasure. Doth any man doubt, 1s that if there were taken out of men's minds vain opinions, flattering hopes, false valuations, imaginations as one would, and the like, but it would leave the minds of a number of men poor shrunken things, full of melancholy and indisposition, and unpleasing to themselves? One 30 of the fathers, in great severity, called poesy vinum...
