Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on New Systems and Architecture for Automatic Speech Recognition and Synthesis, held at Bonas, Gers, France, 2-14 July 1984
The book collects the contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Speech Recognition and Understanding: Recent Advances, Trends and Applications", held in Cetraro, Italy, during the first two weeks of July 1990. This Institute focused on three topics that are considered of particular interest and rich of i'p.novation by researchers in the fields of speech recognition and understanding: Advances in Hidden Markov modeling, connectionist approaches to speech and language modeling, and linguistic processing including language and dialogue modeling. The purpose of any ASI is that of encouraging scientific communications between researchers of NATO countries through advanced tutorials and presentations: excellent tutorials were offered by invited speakers that present in this book 15 papers which sum marize or detail the topics covered in their lectures. The lectures were complemented by discussions, panel sections and by the presentation of related works carried on by some of the attending researchers: these presentations have been collected in 42 short contributions to the Proceedings. This volume, that the reader can find useful for an overview, although incomplete, of the state of the art in speech understanding, is divided into 6 Parts.

Content-based multimedia retrieval is a challenging research field with many unsolved problems. This monograph details concepts and algorithms for robust and efficient information retrieval of two different types of multimedia data: waveform-based music data and human motion data. It first examines several approaches in music information retrieval, in particular general strategies as well as efficient algorithms. The book then introduces a general and unified framework for motion analysis, retrieval, and classification, highlighting the design of suitable features, the notion of similarity used to compare data streams, and data organization.
This book is the result of the second NATO Advanced Study Institute on speech processing held at the Chateau de Bonas, France, from June 29th to July 10th, 1981. This Institute provided a high-level coverage of the fields of speech transmission, recognition and understanding, which constitute important areas where research activity has re cently been associated with actual industrial developments. This book will therefore include both fundamental and applied topics. Ten survey papers by some of the best specialists in the field are included. They give an up-to-date presentation of several important problems in automatic speech processing. As a consequence the book can be considered as a reference manual on some important areas of automatic speech processing. The surveys are indicated by 'a * in the table of contents. This book also contains research papers corresponding to original works, which were presented during the panel sessions of the Institute. For the sake of clarity the book has been divided into five sections : 1. Speech Analysis and Transmission: An emphasis has been laid on the techniques of linear prediction (LPC), and the problems involved in the transmission of speech at various bit rates are addressed in details. 2. Acoustics and Phonetics : One'of the major bottleneck in the development of speech recogni tion systems remains the transcription of the continuous speech wave into some discrete strings or lattices of phonetic symbols. Two survey papers discuss this problem from different points of view and several practical systems are also described.
