Excerpt from The Atomic Theory This view gave such a clear-cut and tangible representa tion of chemical combination, that it was very largely, though not universally, adopted, and caused the conception of the atom to be familiar to every chemist. Excerpt from The Development of the Atomic Theory The consequences of all this, in the history of chemistry at least, are that original work when published is largely ignored that there is hardly any critical examination of results; and that errors which were exposed fifty years ago are still rampant. Some of these observations are illustrated in the following pages. A. N. Meldrum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lucretius and the Atomic Theory There is a somewhat popular impression that speculation, or abstract thought, and imagination are incompatible. Perhaps they are rarely found together in remarkable exercise in the same individual; and this, while no proof of their incompatibility, is quite sufficient to satisfy a popular logic. I should be very sorry, indeed, to think that they are incompatible; for I do not know any greater help to the speculative power, or better corrective of vagueness in speculation, than imagination. The more you can individualise thought, the more clear it becomes, the less verbal, the more real; and all individualising, all embodiment of the abstract, is an imaginative effort, and often a very hard one. Excerpt from A New View of the Origin of Dalton's Atomic Theory IT may seem remarkable that, after the lapse of nearly a century since John Dalton first applied the atomic theory of matter to chemical phenomena, it should be possible to find anything new respecting the genesis of his ideas. And this is the more remarkable when we remember that the life and scientific labours of the great Manchester chemist have formed the subject of independent memoirs at the hands of two such able contemporaries as Charles Henry and Angus Smith. The explana tion is to be found in the unlooked-for discovery, in the rooms of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, Where the whole of Dalton's experimental work was carried out, of his. Excerpt from Foundations of the Atomic Theory: Comprising Papers and Extracts N a former paper which I submitted to this Society, On the constitution of mixed gases, I adopted such proportions of the simple elastic fluids to constitute the atmosphere as were then current, not intending to warrant the accuracy of them all, as stated in the said paper; my principal object in that essay was, to point out the manner in which mixed elastic fluids exist together, and to insist upon what I think a very important and fundamental position in the doctrine of such fluids namely, that the elastic or repulsive power of each particle is confined to those of its own kind; and con sequently the force of such fluid, retained in a given vessel, or gravifiting, is the same in a separate as in a mixed state, depending upon its proper density and temperature. This principle accords with all experience, and I have no doubt will soon be perceived and acknow ledged by chemists and philosophers in general; and its application will elucidate a variety of facts, which are otherwise involved in obscurity. From the Memoirs of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, Second Series, Volume I., 1805, pp. 244-258. In this paper there is announced the first example of the law of multiple proportions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Atomic Theory of Lucretius: Contrasted With Modern Doctrines of Atoms and Evolution In modern scientific thought we find a parallel which helps us to realize how Lucretius's atomic theory taught him to regard Nature, and how his conception of Matter developed into a naive theory of Evolution. Recent inquiry and Specula tion regarding the process of Evolution, the. Origin of Life and the potency of Matter, as illustrated by Tyndall's famous Presidential address, will enable us to realize more clearly, by comparison, what Lucretius's actual belief on these points was.
