Excerpt from Atlas and Epitome of Abdominal Hernias The subject of abdominal hernia is one of the most important in the entire domain of medical teaching, since these hernias are not only exceedingly common, but the fre quent occurrence of strangulation demands extraordinarily quick and energetic surgical intervention. In this respect the responsibility of the physician is unusually great, and he will have to decide between the life and death of the patient intrusted. To his care more often, probably, than in any other affection. The treatment is productive of better results than in other affections, provided the condition is recognized early and that this recognition is followed by the proper therapeutic measures. In order to meet these responsibilities, however, a most thorough knowledge of the entire subject is necessary, and the details of this subject extend over a wide field. If this book should succeed in awakening an interest in abdominal hernias among physicians and students, and in inciting them to a careful study of the subject, I shall consider that my labors have been rewarded.
