Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Talk to Me thrives on an important late 20th-century cultural development in design: a shift from the centrality of function to that of meaning. From this new perspective, objects contain information that goes well beyond their immediate use or appearance, providing access to complex systems and networks and acting as gateways and interpreters. Whether openly and actively, or in subtle, subliminal ways, things talk to us, and designers write the initial script that lets us develop and improvise the dialogue. Talk to Me focuses on objects that involve direct interaction, such as interfaces, information systems, communication devices, and projects that establish a practical, emotional or even sensual connection between their users and entities such as cities, companies, governmental institutions, as well as other people. The featured objects range in date from the early 1980s - beginning with the first Graphic User Interface, developed by Xerox Parc in 1981 - with particular attention given to projects from the last five years and to several ones currently in development. Included are a diverse array of examples, from computer and machine interfaces to websites, video games, devices and tools, and installations. Organized thematically, Talk to Me features essays by Paola Antonelli, Jamer Hunt, Alexandra Midel, Kevin Slavin, and Koi Vinh. By introducing design practices that are becoming increasingly crucial to our world, the book presents a highly distilled sample of today's best design production that uses technology in creative and unexpected ways, showing how rich and deep design's influence will be on our future.

This retrospective volume celebrates five decades of Howardena Pindell's art, including works on paper, collage, photography, film, and video. Born in middle-class Philadelphia in the 1940s, Howardena Pindell came of age during the Civil Rights movement. As an African-American woman artist, making her way in the world provided Pindell with source material to inspire her work. This book examines every facet of Pindell's impressive career to date. Since the 1960s, she has used materials such as glitter, talcum powder, and perfume to stretch the boundaries of traditional canvas painting. She has also infused her work with traces of her labor, such as obsessively affixing dots of pigment and circles made with an ordinary hole punch tool. After a car crash in 1979 left her with short-term amnesia, Pindell's work looked beyond the painting studio to explore a wide range of subjects, including the personal and diaristic as well as the social and political. This monograph also highlights Pindell's work with photography, film, and performance. Excerpts from the artist's writing, in particular her critique of the art world and her responses to feminism and racial politics, provide prescient commentary in light of conversations around equality and inclusion today. Ever since it’s existence, perhaps more than happiness, unhappiness, limits and depression have forced artists to produce, and it is seen that artworks which arise primarily as a result of the need to self-heal, bring society together against common and binding challenges. This coronavirus outbreak, which has affected the whole world, is one of the hard times humankind is going through. In this period we have been living since March, art offers the most valuable contribution to the sustainability of life with its features that reconcile emotional conflicts, increase awareness, enable the development of social skills, manage behaviors, guide reality and contribute to solving problems. As the people of the world, in this period when we question our relationship with each other, nature and animals, when we are unsure about the future, and when we reconsider our perceptions and priorities, artworks are the only tools that have the power to cope with the coronavirus under its conditions. Because like the virus itself, artworks are capable of passing all boundaries, and they can influence all people, even if they’re under different flags, speaking different languages. This influence will bring back the awareness, the hope, the knowledge that we’re not alone, the compromise, the sustainability of life and its colors. Goethe’s “One cannot escape from the world with greater certainty than through art, and one cannot relate to it with greater certainty than through art.” aphorism reveals a truth that enlightens our present from centuries ago.
