It has always been the case that the teaching of art has had to deal with social changes. We are currently facing historic challenges and phenomena which we could never have imagined – the global financial crisis, the massive migration flows, and the ubiquitous spread of new technologies in our everyday life. Creative competence is needed for overcoming the disciplinary boundaries and in order to make equal opportunities for education possible in a diverse society. This publication takes a critical look at the role of art and design education amidst these social changes – using theoretical reflection, practical experience, and empirical analysis.
How design can change the world. Change is the only constant. In 2020 the world experienced a global pandemic, social inequalities, climate change, racial injustices, riots and unrests, and rapid advances of new technologies. Although many fear change, it is the job of designers to create and thrive in such times. To document our present moment, Gjoko Muratovski invited ten highly influential design figures--including iconic design leaders such as Carole Bilson, Karim Rashid, Bruce Mau, Steven Heller, and Don Norman--to reflect on the current state of affairs. By looking to the past and reflecting on the present, these designers project very personal images of the future that they would like to see. The conversations are broad, covering topics as diverse as beauty, race, and gender to design activism and economic resilience.
It's time to design the next iteration of higher education. There is no question that higher education faces significant challenges. Most of today's universities aren't prepared to tackle issues like demographic change, the continued defunding of public education, cost pressures, and the opportunities and challenges of educational technologies. Then, of course, there is the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic, which will reverberate for years and may very well usher higher education into an era of significant structural change. Some critics argue that a premium should be placed on change functions—that is to say, on creativity, innovation, organizational learning, and change management. Yet few institutions of higher education have functions focused on thoughtful, iterative problem-solving and opportunity identification. The authors of Design for Change in Higher Education argue that we must imagine and actively make our way to new institutional forms. They assert that design—a practical art that is conceptually rich and visible in its concreteness—must become a core internal competency of the university. They propose one grounded in the practical experiences of a specific educational design organization: Michigan State University's Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology, which all three authors have helped to run. The Hub was created to address issues of participation, impact, and scale in moving learning innovations from the individual to the collective and from the classroom to the institution. Framing each chapter around a case study of design practice in higher education, the book uses that case study as the foundation on which to build design theory for higher education. It is complemented by an online playbook featuring tactics that can be used and adapted by others interested in facilitating their own design work. Touching on learning experience design (LXD) as an increasingly critical practice, the authors also develop a constructivist view of designing conversations. This book offers a range of approaches to teaching higher education design students to learn to design collaboratively and creatively, through transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning experiences. It highlights that the premise of traditional disciplinary silos does little to advance the competencies needed for contemporary design and non-linear career paths. It makes the point that higher education should respond to the impacts of a changing society, including fluctuating market demands, economic variations, uncertainties, and globalization. Chapters highlight approaches that address this changing landscape, to meet student, industry and societal needs and reflect a range of design education contexts in which the authors have taught, with a focus on experiences at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, but also including collaborations and comparative discussions elsewhere in Australia and globally, spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. Trading Places rethinks, develops, and tests design-driven practices and methods to engage with participation in public space and public issues. With this book we aim to help art and design researchers, students, practitioners, and the multiple stakeholders they collaborate with, to explore what participatory ways of working in our contemporary urban environment entail. Six approaches are discussed: intervention, performative mapping, play, data mining, modelling in dialogue, and curating. Each approach offers a different kind of logic and produces a different type of knowledge. A first-of-its-kind critical overview of how art leads to moral action in the field of theological ethics One question that remains insufficiently addressed in theological ethics is the question of how art leads to moral action. While many modernist theories consider art to be a morally irrelevant activity, others think that the arts, and the emotions they elicit, are integral to moral formation and justice. Challenging both kinds of theories, Art and Moral Change proposes that art is essential because it is an inevitable source of moral disagreement. Drawing on the work of Jonathan Edwards and many others in theology, philosophy, and literary studies, Art and Moral Change argues that the arts are the cultural mediums through which we can better understand what is morally possible in the midst of difference. The arts, in other words, can serve as snapshots of a particular community's perspectives on the good life, offering glimpses not only of competing moral visions within society but also of the extent to which these contested moral views are reconcilable. Thus, the arts reveal the limits of moral reasoning, confirm the contextuality of moral discernment, and necessitate moral thinking that is dialogical and dialectical. Art and Moral Change provides a first-of-its-kind critical overview of how the field of theological ethics approaches and should utilize aesthetics. The core premise—that paying attention to art encourages us to appreciate the ethical importance of disagreement, difference, and conflict—will foster greater understanding of aesthetics and ethics for students and scholars of theological, social, and virtue ethics.

ICADE 5 aims to bring together leading academic artists, arts and design researchers and scholars to exchange and share their notion, experiences, and research results on all aspects of Digital Media Literacy and Mastery in Arts and Design education during pandemic and its urgencies after pandemics. It also provides a premier interdisciplinary platform for arts and design researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted which involves digital media literacy or mastery in the fields of Arts and Design education.
