Scotland; What a country! Being from the North of Ireland, there is fairly easy access to the country via the ferry service which departs from Belfast several times a day and with a bicycle; arrive, follow their instructions, load the bicycle and take a seat. Arrive, and well, the road network is fairly simple, once out of the terminal there are two choices; right or left, north or south. Part One of this jaunt I chose the left and ended up in Wick, North-East of the country... Could have gone further but was a Friday; heavy traffic on the single carriageway. Part Two, I took a right and followed the Scottish border to the capital; Edinburgh via Dumfries and small villages until destination reached. Part Three, Edinburgh to Aberdeen – where I left the bicycle in for a service and the MicroSD card fragmented hence minimal photographs. Part Four, I returned to Aberdeen and made my way back to Wick. Stunning landscapes throughout. Would recommend the West coast of Scotland as a cycle. Right from the port, stunning views all over. Some inclines scattered throughout but once you move over them, fairly powerful coasting from there. This is Ireland in Scotland.

A bicycle is a great way to explore a country. Be it here, there or anywhere. It can be challenging and demanding at times but there is nothing to be proven and if you have the time, you can explore a little more. This book is about the travelling done from the north of Ireland to the south of Ireland on the east coast and then on the west coast. I didn’t see everything nor was I travelling to see everything, there may be some places that I visited that may not be included on an itinerary. This is 40 days around Ireland. This is Ireland, but not all the island has to offer.

Seeking a temporary escape from the city and a world gone mad, Alan Brown plots out a personal challenge: an epic coast-to-coast trip through the lonely interior of the Highlands. He traverses paths historic and new, eschewing creature comforts and high-tech gear, trusting his (mostly) serviceable bike and his own skills. Armed with the essentials and a sense of curiosity, he discovers more about nature, people, our country, risk and himself than he ever thought possible. Alan traces a route from Argyllshire’s Loch Etive across remote Rannoch moors, dramatic Grampian terrain and the beautiful glens of Strathspey to reach the Moray Firth at Findhorn. Ready for all weathers and obstacles, he succumbs to the hypnotic daily routine of ride, eat, sleep, repeat. He’s savouring the landscapes, the wildlife and the solitude, and relishing the self-reliance. He is also picking up clues to past lives and discovering how the land has been altered by industry and game sports or, sometimes, conserved for wildlife and trees.

'A raw and honest account. In Search of Sisu touches on key elements of human psychology, overcoming adversity and difficult decision making on an intensely personal journey' Bear Grylls - - - - - 'Powerfully written and compelling. A must-read for anyone with an interest in adventure' Sir Ranulph Fiennes - - - - - At the age of 22, Geordie Stewart became the youngest Briton to climb the Seven Summits - the highest mountain on every continent. Aged 17, he read a book about Everest and, despite no climbing experience, became obsessed with achieving this ambition. Four years later, despite turning around 150m from the summit on his first attempt, he stood on top of the world. The book offers a raw, emotive and passionate insight into the complexity of teenage vulnerabilities. The real aim in those seven mountains was not climbing glory or breaking records but rather a path to contentment. In Search of Sisu reveals Geordie's transition from a self-doubting teenager battling an all-encompassing eating disorder to a young man who had the belief to realise his dreams.
