DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis well-presented volume presents fifty papers, forming the proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology held in Gdansk in 1997. Divided into eight sections, the contributors examine: boat and ship archaeology in central and eastern Europe; new evidence from the antique world; reconstructions of vessels, including Minoan and Roman boats and the Hjortsprint boat; local European boats, including small vessels from Norway and Israel; extra-European vessles; prehistoric and early medieval vessels; European ships through the centuries; and final thoughts. The papers are well illustrated and all in English.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAlexander and Janet Schaw, Scottish siblings, began a journey in 1774 that would take them from Edinburgh to the Caribbean Islands and then to America. Part of the early wave of Scottish colonization, the pair visited family and friends who had already established themselves in the colonies. ""Journal of a Lady of Quality"" is Janet Schaw's account of this voyage through letters to a friend in Scotland. The letters describe the sights, scenery, and social life she encountered, but they also reveal the political atmosphere of an America on the verge of revolution. Stephen Carl Arch provides a new introduction for this Bison Books edition.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Fry site (33Lu165) was an Ottawa (Odawa) farmstead on the lower Maumee River of Ohio that existed A.D. 1814-1832. Excavations revealed an Ottawa bark burial with trade goods, a cabin or shack, and an animal pen or compound. The material culture consisted of a wide variety of Native and Euro-American manufactured artifacts, including trade silver. The bark burial with trade goods is dated A.D. 1780-1809, slightly earlier than the farmstead occupation. The farmstead is connected with the Roche de Boeuf and Wolf Rapids bands of Ottawa that were removed to Kansas Territory in 1832. The Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma are the descendants of these Maumee River Ottawa.
