DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis WEMS Book brings together a selection of papers presented at the International Congress Aqua 2003 held in the historic city of Cartagena, Colombia, in October 2003. A total of 32 papers were selected out of the 87 presentations made at the Congress. They have been grouped in three different categories covering multiple uses of water, natural wastewater treatment, and knowledge transfer in the water sector. The editors wish to acknowledge the time-consuming work of the Scientific Committee refereeing submissions both before and after the event, which resulted in the selection of papers in this volume. The editors are most grateful to the authors of the papers in the volume which contributed to the success of Aqua 2003. The biennial Aqua congresses are becoming one of the most important technical and scientific events related to water management in Latin America. This book is out of print and is unavailable to purchase at this time.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"Pangasius" is a genus of shark catfishes native to Asia. The term is often used to refer to the commercially important Pangasius bocourti, or basa fish. In Vietnam, water pollution in Pangasius aquaculture endangers its economic success and meaning for rural development in the Mekong Delta. With the help of Bourdieu's theory of practice, this book considers the interplay of subjective and objective structures on the practices in Pangasius cultivation. It shows that economic dependencies in a global commodity production system have led to a transformation process that most aquaculturists cannot cope with. The discrepancy between the ideal and real situation can no longer be ignored otherwise the downward trend will continue. (Series: ZEF Development Studies - Vol. 26)

It contains 16 case studies which consider key challenges in water resource management and makes a number of recommendations to guide future action and encourage sustainable use, productivity and management of our increasingly scarce freshwater resources.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKState of the World 2004 takes a fresh look at the trends that have put the global economy on a collision course with the Earth's ecosystems. This year's edition has a special focus on the theme of consumption. It questions whether a less-consumptive society is possible; and concludes that it is essential. The book explores overconsumption, a by-product of affluence; and underconsumption, linked to poverty, and provides 'behind the scenes' exposes of the devastating environmental impacts of some of our most popular products, from plastic bags, to paper, to mobile phones. Published annually in 28 languages, each edition draws on the breadth of expertise of Worldwatch's award-winning team of writers and researchers. State of the World is relied upon by national governments, UN agencies, development workers and law-makers for its authoritative and up-to-the-minute analysis and information. It is essential for anyone concerned with building a positive, global future.
