This authoritative book provides a comprehensive review of the highly important subject of non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures that do not cause material damage and which usually enable the structure to be used while the surveys are carried out. Non-destructive evaluation of the infrastructure also plays a key role in calculating and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement. Providing details of related techniques and case studies, this book offers an overview of how to plan and implement the NDT of reinforced concrete structures.

"Reinforcement corrision is the most important cause of deterioration in reinforced concrete structutres today. By comparing the different repair methods which have been established during recent years and discussing their advantages and drawbacks, this guide details practical approaches to enable non-specialist investigators to carry out at least some initial investigation themselves and considers the problems of detailsed investigations in a way which even the most experienced consultations and their clients will find helpful." - back cover.

Around 50% of Europe's annual construction budget is spent on refurbishment and repair of existing structures. This report is the culmination of a wide-ranging survey into the performance of both current European concrete repair techniques and inspection practice, and current research projects. It assesses case histories gathered from across the sector from owners of concrete structures, repairers and research institutes, and presents its findings using charts, graphs, tables and photographs. A review of the problems of concrete durability, current issues of sustainability, and the differing expectations of what concrete repairs should acheive, provide an insightful introduction to the subject. The survey was conducted by the CONREPNET network, made up of European research and representative bodies sponsored by the European Commission.

This report is the result of the work of the former FIP Commission 10: Management and strengthening of concrete structures, which replaced to the former FIP Commission 10: Maintenance, operation and use in 1995. The former CEB Commission V: Operation and Use and in particular its Task Group 5.4: Assessment, maintenance and repair also played a role in this report. When in 1998 the FIP merged with the CEB to form the fib, the well advanced writing was completed by a small editorial group. The purpose of the report is twofold: to give an overview of the issues relating to the management of concrete structures in general and to add details about assessment and remedial action, as these are important technical aspects of management and maintenance systems. The more general aspects of asset management are dealt with in Chapter 1, aimed at owners and decision-makers. Chapters 2 and 3, aimed at consultants and contractors, deal with decision-making in the assessment process. A review of remediation techniques is given in Chapter 3, intended to help in the selection of remedial actions rather than in their execution. The report also includes some significant appendices regarding load testing, monitoring and fire, and also special considerations related to seismic retrofitting. Appendix 1 offers keywords that the various actors in this field could use for a common language.

The field of Concrete Repair and Rehabilitation is gaining importance in view of its positive impacts in terms of socio-economic benefits and environmental sustainability. Due to growing importance of this field, many engineering colleges have included the subject of concrete repair and rehabilitation in the senior undergraduate and postgraduate course curriculums of civil engineering. This book is an earnest attempt to help students of civil engineering in enhancing their understanding and awareness about critical elements of repair and rehabilitation of concrete structure. The content is organised in such a way that it fulfils the academic needs of the students. This text attempts to dovetail all important aspects such as causes of distress, assessment and evaluation of deterioration, techniques for repair and rehabilitation along with selection of repair and rehabilitation materials and other important aspects related to preventive maintenance and rehabilitation/structural safety measures. The primary objective of this textbook is to guide students to: • Understand the underlying causes and types of deterioration in concrete structure • Learn about the field and laboratory testing methods available to evaluate the level of deterioration. • Get well acquainted with options of repair materials and techniques available to address different types of distress in concrete structure. • Grasp the knowledge of available techniques and their application for strengthening existing structural systems.
