Excerpt from Applied Surgical Anatomy, Regionally Presented, for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The study' of Anatomy is relieved of much of its difficulty when it is approached on the practical side. Isolated details do not appeal to the faculty of interest, but when they are set forth in their natural relationship, and their practical application is pointed out, the mind grasps and recollects them with facility. As Anatomy is the most basic of all the medical sciences, a working knowledge of its data is indispensable for the study and practice of scientific medicine and sur gery. The author has endeavored to embody these principles in the present work, and to do it in such a manner as to answer the needs of both students and practitioners. The plan of the work has been developed from twelve years' experience in teaching Anatomy. The author believes the form of presentation he has followed to be the best for didactic lectures, and that descriptive Anatomy is most advantageously learned from text books and in the dissecting room. The regional and topographical method of treating Applied Anatomy is likewise the most convenient for clinical purposes. It is scarcely necessary to state that in order not to exceed the proper limits of a book designed for clinical and didactic purposes a most careful selection had to be made from the vast aggregate of knowledge constituting the modern science of anatomy. If in parts the text may appear quite as much like an anatomical surgery as a surgical anatomy, it is because of the author's belief that this is the best way to Complete the study of anatomy and to begin the study of surgery. Excerpt from Medical Applied Anatomy: For Students and Practitioners As the realms of Medicine and Surgery are not sharply separated from one another, it has been a matter of some difficulty to avoid encroaching on the domain of Surgical Applied Anatomy, but the endeavour has been made to restrict the subject-matter so as to present, at moderate length, the more important applications of Anatomy to the study of Clinical Medicine. On this account, the subject has been treated according to Systems and not according to Regions, and it is hoped that the grouping of muscles with their nerves of supply under the Nervous System will be found useful by the reader. In collecting the material for this book, I have necessarily been indebted to the published works of numerous authors, and, more particularly, I wish to express my great indebtedness to the writings of Mackenzie, Sahli, and Purves Stewart. For numerous suggestions and much helpful advice, always freely and willingly given, I owe my warmest thanks to Dr. J.D. Comrie. In addition, I gratefully acknowledge the help given me by Dr. A. Murray Drennan, who assisted in the laborious task of proof-reading, and by Dr. E.B. Jamieson, whose criticisms have always been of the greatest value. Some of the illustrations have appeared previously in other works. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Treatise on Applied Anatomy IN undertaking a work upon Applied Anatomy my object has been to provide an account of the regional anatomy of the human body in its more important applications to Medicine and Surgery. It has been my conviction for many years that the subject of anatomy might with advantage be taught to students of medicine more from the applied standpoint and less as an abstract science. Some years ago, at the instigation of Professor Cunningham, a course of lectures in Applied Anatomy was made obligatory in the Medical School of Trinity College, and has been productive of the most gratifying results. Were anatomical teaching conducted more generally on these lines, it would, I have no doubt, help to bridge over the wide gap which separates the dissecting room from the surgical theatre, and render the transition from the one to the other less abrupt; the subject would possess more attraction for the student, it would be more easily remembered, and certainly more useful. Although I have endeavoured to treat the subject of Applied Anatomy in a general way, yet, in the main, the book is surgical; indeed, in some respects its scope might have been more correctly expressed by giving it the title Surgery from the Anatomical Standpoint. The general plan adopted in the arrangement of the text is one which I have found by experience most popular with students in the lecture theatre. Each region is introduced by a concise account of its topographical anatomy, developmental details being supplied where necessary, and subsequently the more important lessons - medical, surgical, and pathological - which are to be derived from it are presented for consideration. Excerpt from Surgical Applied Anatomy Applied anatomy has, I imagine, a twofold func tion. On the one hand it serves to give a precise basis to those incidents and procedures in practice that more especially involve anatomical knowledge; on the other hand it endues the dull items of that knowledge with meaning and interest by the aid of illustrations drawn from common medical and surgical experience. In this latter aspect it bears somewhat the same relation to Systematic Anatomy that a series of experiments in Physics bears to a treatise dealing with the bare data of that science. The student of Human Anatomy has Often a nebulous notion that what he is learning will sometime prove of service to him and may be conscious also that the study is a valuable, if somewhat unexciting, mental exercise. Beyond these impressions he must. Regard his efforts as concerned merely in the accumulation of a number of hard, unassimilable facts. It should be one object of Applied Anatomy to invest these facts with the interest derived from an association with the circumstances of daily life; it should make the dry bones live. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Clinical Anatomy: For Students and Practitioners Many changes have taken place in the leaching of anatomy during the past twenty years. The rapid development of the various branches of practical medicine and surgery has necessitated a most thorough preparation in the fundamental subjects, such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and pathology. In the majority of our medical schools descriptive anatomy accompanied by dissections is taught during the first two years, and then the student feels that he may consider anatomy a closed chapter. In but few of the colleges is he taught to take a perspective view, or, in other words, to study Regional or Topographic Anatomy. He has spent many hours in the memorizing of nerves, arteries, veins, and the description of viscera, but he is unable to apply this knowledge to clinical work. The primary object of this book is to serve as a bridge for both practitioner and student from the descriptive anatomy, as it is usually taught in the first two years of a medical course, to its daily application at the bedside, in the clinic, or in the operating room. The term "Clinical Anatomy" seemed to be the most appropriate one to use to express the larger field which the subject covers. The term was first employed in this sense by Dr. A. D. Bevan, to convey the fact that clinical anatomy is anatomical knowledge as applied to every branch of clinical work - i. e., not only medicine and surgery in the narrower sense, but all the specialties. In teaching this subject to third year medical students the author felt the need of a text-book which should cover not only the surgical but also the medical portion of the subject, and he hopes that the work will not be found to have been written from the standpoint of the surgeon alone. An especial attempt has been made to encourage both practitioners and students to examine the normal human body during life, to palpate and outline structures, and to study the relations of nerves, vessels, viscera, etc., the knowledge of whose position is indispensable to every one engaged in the practice of medicine.
