Pseudoanalytic function theory generalizes and preserves many crucial features of complex analytic function theory. The Cauchy-Riemann system is replaced by a much more general first-order system with variable coefficients which turns out to be closely related to important equations of mathematical physics. This relation supplies powerful tools for studying and solving Schrödinger, Dirac, Maxwell, Klein-Gordon and other equations with the aid of complex-analytic methods. The book is dedicated to these recent developments in pseudoanalytic function theory and their applications as well as to multidimensional generalizations. It is directed to undergraduates, graduate students and researchers interested in complex-analytic methods, solution techniques for equations of mathematical physics, partial and ordinary differential equations.

This book presents applications of hypercomplex analysis to boundary value and initial-boundary value problems from various areas of mathematical physics. Given that quaternion and Clifford analysis offer natural and intelligent ways to enter into higher dimensions, it starts with quaternion and Clifford versions of complex function theory including series expansions with Appell polynomials, as well as Taylor and Laurent series. Several necessary function spaces are introduced, and an operator calculus based on modifications of the Dirac, Cauchy-Fueter, and Teodorescu operators and different decompositions of quaternion Hilbert spaces are proved. Finally, hypercomplex Fourier transforms are studied in detail. All this is then applied to first-order partial differential equations such as the Maxwell equations, the Carleman-Bers-Vekua system, the Schrödinger equation, and the Beltrami equation. The higher-order equations start with Riccati-type equations. Further topics include spatial fluid flow problems, image and multi-channel processing, image diffusion, linear scale invariant filtering, and others. One of the highlights is the derivation of the three-dimensional Kolosov-Mushkelishvili formulas in linear elasticity. Throughout the book the authors endeavor to present historical references and important personalities. The book is intended for a wide audience in the mathematical and engineering sciences and is accessible to readers with a basic grasp of real, complex, and functional analysis.

This volume is a collection of papers devoted to the 70th birthday of Professor Vladimir Rabinovich. The opening article (by Stefan Samko) includes a short biography of Vladimir Rabinovich, along with some personal recollections and bibliography of his work. It is followed by twenty research and survey papers in various branches of analysis (pseudodifferential operators and partial differential equations, Toeplitz, Hankel, and convolution type operators, variable Lebesgue spaces, etc.) close to Professor Rabinovich's research interests. Many of them are written by participants of the International workshop “Analysis, Operator Theory, and Mathematical Physics” (Ixtapa, Mexico, January 23–27, 2012) having a long history of scientific collaboration with Vladimir Rabinovich, and are partially based on the talks presented there. The volume will be of great interest to researchers and graduate students in differential equations, operator theory, functional and harmonic analysis, and mathematical physics.

This monograph develops a theory of continuous and differentiable functions, called monogenic functions, in the sense of Gateaux functions taking values in some vector spaces with commutative multiplication. The study of these monogenic functions in various commutative algebras leads to a discovery of new ways of solving boundary value problems in mathematical physics. The book consists of six parts: Part I presents some preliminary notions and introduces various concepts of differentiable mappings of vector spaces. Part II - V is devoted to the study of monogenic functions in various spaces with commutative multiplication, namely, three dimensional commutative algebras with two-dimensional radical, finite-dimensional commutative associative algebras, infinite-dimensional vector spaces associated with the three-dimensional Laplace equation and infinite-dimensional vector spaces associated with axial-symmetric potential fields. Part VI presents some boundary value problems for axial-symmetric potential fields and develops effective analytic methods of solving these boundary value problems with various applications in mathematical physics. Graduate students and researchers alike benefit from this book.

Transmutation operators in differential equations and spectral theory can be used to reveal the relations between different problems, and often make it possible to transform difficult problems into easier ones. Accordingly, they represent an important mathematical tool in the theory of inverse and scattering problems, of ordinary and partial differential equations, integral transforms and equations, special functions, harmonic analysis, potential theory, and generalized analytic functions. This volume explores recent advances in the construction and applications of transmutation operators, while also sharing some interesting historical notes on the subject.
