Excerpt from Methods of Gas Analysis In publishing my "New Methods for the Analysis of Gases," it was not my intention to write a manual of gas analysis, but merely to describe my own researches and the construction of apparatus. My present plan, however, after ten years' experience and the most varied work with gases and their analysis, is to describe all of the operations which are involved in the analysis of gases with my apparatus. I have thought to give the book especial value by limiting myself to the description of those methods which, in my opinion, are at the present time the most practical. I have not endeavoured to give a complete description of all known methods, because the book would then become too bulky to be used as the laboratory guide which it is intended to be. The apparatus devised by Pettersson has been described, because a wholly new principle in the measurement of gases is there brought into use. In the following pages I hope to give a guide to gas analysis by the help of which the various examinations, even the most difficult, can be carried out. Excerpt from Handbook of Technical Gas-Analysis: Containing Concise Instructions for Carrying Out Gas-Analytical Methods of Proved Utility The field first opened out by Winkler has been very successfully cultivated by other chemists; and it is now quite usual, at any rate in Germany, to perform technical gas-analyses, not merely in chemical works, but for testing the efficiency of steam-boiler furnaces and such purposes. In England some of these pro cesses have also been introduced; but they are not as yet known and appreciated to the same extent as abroad. Hence it may not be unwelcome to English chemists to have a translation of a short treatise, just published by Winkler, which is primarily intended for teaching purposes - that is, for the use of teachers and students in public laboratories - but which likewise serves as a guide and handy book to other chemists wishing to make themselves acquainted with the subject. This treatise is not intended, as was its predecessor, to furnish a complete enumera tion of all apparatus hitherto proposed for technical gas-analysis, but merely to give representative examples of each kind of apparatus, embracing all the divisions of this branch of Chemistry. Excerpt from An Improved Apparatus and Method for the Analysis of Gas Mixtures by Combustion and Absorption There are over 200 small orifices in such a plate, and the gas issuing is broken up into many fine bubbles, which apparently do not coalesce. A froth consisting of small bubbles separated by liquid films is formed at the surface of the reagent. This layer of froth is about 2 cm deep, and some absorption must take place here as well as in the actual passage through the pyrogallol solution. The froth very obligingly disappears when the gas flow through the perforated plate has ceased. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
