The book is neither a tale of instruction nor a recommendation regarding flying. It can only be described as an amazing journey taken by an ordinary women. As she had an obvious fear of heights, the book reveals how she was tricked by her flying-loving husband into learning how to fly airplanes! Never in her wildest dreams could she imagine sitting in the left seat of a small airplane, experiencing extreme terror as the plane leaves the ground for the first time. Share the cockpit with her on a solo flight when she encountered powerful winds gusting near forty-five knots that exceeded anything she had encountered, with her instructor aboard. Today, in 2018, we can celebrate with her as she is as comfortable behind the wheel of an automobile as she is in the cockpit of an airplane.

With the nation at war in the 1940s, 22-year-old Jack Valenti flew combat in Italy. He was in that fateful Dallas motorcade in 1963, flew back to Washington with the new president, and for three years worked in the inner circle of the White House as special assistant to President Johnson. Then, for the next 38 years, with American society and popular culture undergoing a revolutionary transformation, Valenti was the public face of Hollywood in his capacity as head of the Motion Picture Association of America. From growing up poor in a neighborhood of Greek and Italian immigrants in Houston to rising to the highest summits both of national government and Hollywood, Valenti has led several lives. Here is a candid reflection of the life of a brilliantly successful man who helped to shape politics and entertainment in the second half of the twentieth century.

"It's easy to imagine ways the future can be ugly and depressing. It's harder, but more worthwhile, to imagine plausible ways we can make it better," says Stanley Schmidt, and he should know. As the editor of Analog (and a science-fiction writer himself), he's thought about the future more than most. Since the golden age of John W. Campbell (editor from 1938-72), Analog magazine has been renowned for editorials that provoke, prod, inspire, anger, and ignite the magazine's readers into thinking, questioning their own assumptions, and looking at the world with fresh insights. From 1978 to the present, the man challenged to light a fire under the readers month after month has been editor Stanley Schmidt. He has succeeded in exemplary fashion, which helps to explain why he's a twenty-two-time nominee for the best editor Hugo Award. Now, for the first time, thirty-five of his stimulating essays have been gathered in book form. In "King of the Hill (No Matter What)" he considers the questions of animal and machine intelligence. "The Fermi Plague" offers a frightening answer to Enrico Fermi's famous paradox about the apparent absence of alien civilizations. "Invisible Enemies, Intelligent Choices" examines the proper role of science in public policy. Running the gamut from how to challenge scientific orthodoxy to the flaws of our educational system, from the serious value of humor to the difficult choices between jobs and conservation, all the pieces are, in different ways, answers to the question asked by the title: Which way to the future? Schmidt's answers will engage anyone with an eye on tomorrow.

A few years ago, I had a particularly interesting episode concerning a light aircraft Cessna 150. It was a catastrophic engine failure to be precise. When someone mentioned I should write about it, I dismissed the idea, I suppose because over the years I have encountered and endured so many close calls. Stretching right back to my childhood, incidents like drinking petrol as a very young boy, just escaping being burned to death as the ground beneath my feet caved in on a burning underground fire, nearly drowning at sea when unable to swim, and falling from a helicopter seemed almost commonplace. I narrowly avoided being cut in half by a huge bulldozer blade, was only a mere couple of seconds away from being burned alive in an armoured vehicle, and but a fraction of an inch from being crushed between two halves of a train, which left a black greasy mark across my back. Flying my Cobra glider one day, I was caught in and brought down by a thunderstorm. Having no option but to fly completely blind in torrential rain over a built-up area, I made a forced landing in a potato field sporting a meter-high crop. And I was once launched into the air sideways in a Discus glider, descending to earth in a horrifying crash at great speed, only to be encased upside down in the smashed wreckage. My life has been Anything But Plane Sailing.

“There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.” — W.W. Windstaff “Any idiot can get an airplane off the ground, but an aviator earns his keep by bringing it back anytime, anywhere, under any circumstances that man and God can dream up.” — Walter Cunningham The author piloted Air Force heavy jets for over two decades, in peacetime and wartime. IF YOU FLY... DON’T CRASH! (Confessions of a White-knuckle Pilot) highlights some of the good, the bad, and the simply silly aspects of aviation experienced during his thousands of hours airborne.
