Excerpt from Annual Report of the Selectmen, Treasurer, and School Committee, of the Town of Upper Gilmanton: For the Year Ending March First, 1869 There has been twenty-two schools in town this year. The most of them have been succesful. Prudential Committees should exercise great care in selecting their teachers, and not hire those that are not capable, because they are their triends. One of the most irnpartant things in a school, and at the same time the most (liflicult to secure, is good order. Your Com mitte has felt that if our teachers, or any one of them, were liable to criticism, it would be upon this point. It has been apparent in several schools that the discipline was not What their interests required. There ar two important depart ments in education, the family and the school. If we have a good chool it may be ruined by the evil influences of the parents. It we have a poor school it is not a proper Way for the parents to talk of the imperfections of the school. And teacher before their children this not only ruins the school, but has a tendency to ruin their children. If more of the parents would teach their children obedience at home, we should have less disorderly schools; then if we should have a poor school there should be proper measures taken to have the teacher discharged. Parents, upon you depends the moral training of the rising generation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
