Excerpt from Animal Units of Livestock Fed Annually: 1947-48 to 1950-51 Animal units were constructed so that they represent about the same quantity of feed in one part of the country as in another. An average milk cow in the United States is used as the base animal unit in this -study. An average milk cow in New York consumes more feed than does the average cow in the United States and therefore is more than one animal unit, but in several other States the average milk cow is less than one unit. Animal units given in this report are designed to apply at the State and national level but they are not necessarily suitable for apply ing to individual farms or groups of farms.
