Excerpt from Animal Magnetism, or Mesmerism: Its History, Phenomena, and Present Condition; Containing Practical Instructions and the Latest Discoveries in the Science Surely what great men believe, ordinary men may try. And yet, with what violence of ridicule is Mesmerism still received by medical practitioners? It is evident, however, that they cannot long remain ignorant of these matters without falling greatly behind the age in respect to professional acquirements. Mankind are not to be deprived of the blessings of a potent remedy, because the professors of the healing art choose to te main wilfully blind to the truth. The 9th International Congress of Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine expresses the continuity in the effort to gain scientific knowledge of hypnosis and scientific status for it, ever since the 1st International Congress for Experimental and Therapeutic Hypnotism was held in Paris in 1889, attended by many of the best-remembered psychiatrists and psychologists of the day - men such as Babinski, Bernheim, Binet, Delboeuf, Freud, James, Lombroso, F. W. H. Myers, Ribot, and many others. The continuity was broken by the period of reduced interest in hypnosis between the time of the 2nd Inter national Congress for Hypnotism in Paris in 1900, and the revival of interest shown by the 3rd International Congress for Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine in Paris in 1965. Since then, the Congresses have met more regularly, making the one of which this is the report, the 9th. The programs of these Congresses have become increasingly rich through the years, with many of the older problems still with us but now studied more dispassionately in the light of new knowledge and new scientific methods in the design of investigations and the vali dation of scientific findings.

Excerpt from Practical Manual of Animal Magnetism: Containing an Exposition of the Methods Employed in Producing the Magnetic Phenomena; With Its Application to the Treatment and Cure of Diseases The study of Mesmerism haying become so very general in this country within the last few years, - a circumstance for which we are mainly indebted to the untiring zeal and indefatigable exertions of Dr. Elliotson, - it was found necessary that the English public should possess some work in their own language, which might serve as an introduction to this truly interesting science. The great popularity of Dr. Teste's Manuel Pratique de Magnetisme Animal, the very clear and methodical exposition which it gives of the various processes employed in the production of the magnetic phenomena, and of the application of this science to the alleviation and cure of disease, at once pointed it out as one which, presented in an English dress, might prove not unacceptable to the English public. It will be found to possess those qualities which must recommend every didactic work, viz. great simplicity and great clearness of arrangement. From Muddy Waters to Mick Jagger, Elvis to Freddie Mercury, Jeff Buckley to Justin Timberlake, masculinity in popular music has been an issue explored by performers, critics, and audiences. From the dominance of the blues singer over his "woman" to the sensitive singer/songwriter, popular music artists have adopted various gendered personae in a search for new forms of expression. Sometimes these roles shift as the singer ages, attitudes change, or new challenges on the pop scene arise; other times, the persona hardens into a shell-like mask that the performer struggles to escape. Oh Boy! Masculinities and Popular Music is the first serious study of how forms of masculinity are negotiated, constructed, represented and addressed across a range of popular music texts and practices. Written by a group of internationally recognized popular music scholars—including Sheila Whiteley, Richard Middleton, and Judith Halberstam—these essays study the concept of masculinity in performance and appearance, and how both male and female artists have engaged with notions of masculinity in popular music.
