DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Animal Intelligence When I first began to collect materials for this work it was my intention to divide the book into two parts. Of these I intended the first to be concerned only with the facts of animal intelligence, while the second was to have treated of these facts in their relation to the theory of Descent. Finding, however, as I proceeded, that the material was too considerable in amount to admit of being comprised within the limits of a single volume, 1 have made arrangements with the publishers of the 'international Scientific Series to bring out the second division of the work as a separate treatise, under the title 'mental Evolution.' This treatise I hope to get ready for press within a year or two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Animal Intelligence: Experimental Studies It has seemed best to leave the texts unaltered except for the correction of typographical errors, renumbering of tables and figures, and redrawing the latter. In a few places, where the original text has been found likely to be misunderstood, brief notes have been added. It is hard to resist the impulse to temper the style, especially of the Animal Intelligence, ' with a certain sobriety and restraint. What one writes at the age of twenty-three is likely to irritate oneself a dozen years later, as it doubt less irritated others at the time. The charitable reader may allay his irritation by the thought that a degree of exuberance, even of arrogance, is proper to youth. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Nature and Development of Animal Intelligence While the present writer can lay claim to no such roundness of culture, he thinks he can confidently assert that nothing will be found in the following pages that has not some basis in his own observations or experience. The Author has on more than one occasion expressed his belief that mere closet psychology is of little value in advancing the subject as applied to animals. Accordingly, it will be found that by far the greater part of this book is made up of the facts of Observation. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Animal Life and Intelligence There are many books in our language which deal with Animal Intelligence in an anecdotal and conventionally popular manner. There are a few, notably those by Mr. Romanes and Mr. Mivart, which bring adequate knowledge and training to bear on a subject of unusual difficulty. In the following pages I have endeavoured to contribute something (imperfect, as I know full well, but the result of several years' study and thought) to our deeper knowledge of those mental processes which we may fairly infer from the activities of dumb animals. The consideration of Animal Intelligence, from the scientific and philosophical standpoint, has been my primary aim. But so inextricably intertwined is the subject of Intelligence with the subject of Life, the subject of organic evolution with the subject of mental evolution, so closely are questions of Heredity and Natural Selection interwoven with questions of Habit and Instinct, that I have devoted the first part of this volume to a consideration of Organic Evolution. The great importance and value of Professor Weismann's recent contributions to biological science, and their direct bearing on questions of Instinct, rendered such treatment of my subject, not only advisable, but necessary. We took this precaution in order to be better understood by mod ern scientists. The terms understanding, reason and intelligence, however, are used for one and the same physical entity. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Animal Behaviour MY book on Animal Life and Intelligence being out of print, I undertook to revise it for a new Edition. As the work of revision proceeded, however, it appeared that the amended treatment would not fall conveniently under the previous scheme of arrangement. I therefore decided to write a new book under the title of Animal Behaviour. A few passages from the older work have been introduced.
